Gophone Prepaid Online Registration

I wanted to register for AutoPay on our GoPhone plan, but discovered only 4 digits (no characters allowed) is the maximum allowed for the password on ATT's online account. What kind of security is this? This type of password security for online accounts went out years ago ... can be broken in seconds.

Please allow better security on these accounts so I can feel comfortable entering my credit card ino. If this is not done, I'll sign up for a different carrier after only one month with ATT.

Hello @RetiredUser.

I can absolutely understand your concerns about security especially with the amount of unscrupulousness on the Internet these days and thank you for bringing this up. I’ll be happy to help!

Rest assured with your GoPhone account, your payment information is encrypted and not available on the account to keep it safe and secure. If you should ever attempt to log into your account unsuccessfully three times or reset your password, your stored payment information will be deleted for additional security.

Also, any time a GoPhone password is reset, the temporary password is always sent to the phone directly via text message to ensure only the phone’s user knows about this request.

And if you ever need to reset your GoPhone login password, the steps are listed here.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a fantastic day!

Thank you for your response. That helps somewhat, but seems to bring up more questions:

1. Why is ATT limiting the security on GoPhones? Here is a link to ATT’s webpage on how to  “Create a strong password with our tips and requirements” for MyAT&T Online: https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1045954

Please give us the same security.

2. Limiting passwords to 4 numbers goes against all ATT tells us in #1. In addition, most people don’t start their password with a zero, most do not have all the same numbers. This reduces the possible combinations to an unacceptable low number.

3. To make matters worse, 'GoPhone ID' is limited to their phone number. This seems to give the possibility of using a computer to throw out three 4-number combinations to multiple phone number with the possibility of hitting one.

4. Even if a password isn’t hit in #3, all of their accounts are now ‘messed up’ by the “3 password attempt” rule.

Requiring a four-number password is just ridiculous when there's software available that far exceeds this requirement. Give us the same account security that MyAT&T account users have, one that follows ATT’s guidelines in #1.

Hi @RetiredUser!

I appreciate your concerns and I reached out to my leadership to give them your feedback. They assured me that the security being used is perfect for what they’re trying to protect. I can’t go into specifics about our back end protections, but rest assured, you and all our other customers are protected.

Thank you for your follow up questions and have a fantastic day!

When a company tells me in one breath that passwords “Must be 6-24 characters; May not be all letters; May not be all numbers”, then tells me in the next breath that a 4-digit password is “perfect for what they’re TRYING to protect” -- MY ACCOUNT, I have serious doubts about that company’s security concerns. One of these statements is false … I’m not sticking around to find out which one it is.

Remember Home Depot, Target, JP Morgan, EBay, Sony, Anthem, (and the list goes on) … they also thought their “security was perfect”!

Hello again @RetiredUser!

I appreciate you following up on this.

In the end, we agree, security can always be improved with any service. I’m sorry you do not feel satisfied with the current levels of security offered by our GoPhone services.

The article you linked to is our security measures for post-paid accounts, if you so wished, you could utilize them by transferring your service to postpaid.

We would be remiss to lose your business, however you must make the right decision for your preferences and needs.

Let us know if you have any further questions, we’re happy to help however we can!
