SMiShing is phishing through text messages. Fraudsters use this and other scams to get your personal info and more.

Learn how to block unwanted calls and how to protect yourself from SMiShing and other texting scams using your wireless phone or other options.

You can simply toggle a switch in the My Device section of the AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app. When this feature is turned on all text messages originating from all email are blocked, regardless of the sender. Keep in mind that this may block wanted messages from government agencies, first responders, doctors, schools, etc.

Note: FirstNet customers do not have the option to turn this feature on.

Best Practice: AT&T asks that businesses, government agencies, and organizations not use email platforms to send text messages. Instead of email platforms, text senders are encouraged to use 10-digit long codes or short codes for bulk text messaging. These programs are designed to get bulk messages to the customers who want them.

Email spam is more than just the annoying online version of junk mail. Email spam can contain spyware or trojans, and it can direct you to phishing websites where scammers will try to trick you into revealing personal or financial information.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) established a National Do Not Call registry for consumers who want to avoid unwanted sales calls. We honor Do Not Call requests on this national list, as well as state lists and the AT&T internal Do Not Call List.

In addition, if you don't wish to receive special promotions or other sales calls from us, you can ask that your number be listed on our own Do Not Call list.

Someone may contact you saying there is a problem with your rewards account or gift card - this is a scam.

They may say the card was accidentally sent without funds or with less than it was supposed to have. Then they’ll ask for the card information and numbers, telling you they need the information to add funds or send a replacement card.

This is a lie. Do not give them any of your gift card information.

Scammers do this in an attempt to get your information and fraudulently access your account. AT&T will never ask you to send us your personal or account information via email or text message.

There is a common scamming practice known as number spoofing where someone's phone number can be used to call other people and attempt to get personal and private information.

This is illegal and your account or usage is in no way affected by number spoofing.

You can fight number spoofing by:

Follow these steps to setup call protection and device security:

Set call protection preferences
    1.  Open the AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app and tap Calls.
    2.  Scroll to Network call preferences.
    3.  Choose one:
      •  Block caller: You can block calls from your call log, contact list, or manually.¹
      •  Fraud calls: This is automatically set to Block for your protection. You can choose to flag these calls or send to voicemail.¹
      •  Nuisance calls: This is automatically set to Enabled. You can choose to flag, block, or send to voicemail each category. Categories include Political, Spam risk, Surveys, Nonprofit, Private calls, Telemarketers, and Account services. Categories were based on complaints and feedback.^2,3,4
      •  Unknown callers: This defaults to Allowed. You can also choose to send to voicemail.

Manage device security options

Open the app and go to My Device to enable system and passcode or screen lock alerts. These notify you of pending operating system updates for your device. System updates may help fix security issues you don't know about.

Android devices can also get alerts for unauthorized (root) access detection.

If the AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app doesn't update properly from the App Store®
    1.  Go to Settings on your device and tap General.
    2.  Tap Software Update and make sure you have the latest version. If you don't, update it now.
    3.  Close settings and open the App Store.
    4.  Tap Updates, and select Update, next to AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app.

If the AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app doesn't update properly from the Google Play^TM Store, try this:
    1.  Tap Settings.
    2.  Find your running apps and tap Google Play.
    3.  Tap Clear Cache and then Force stop.
    4.  Search for the AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app in Play Store.
    5.  Tap Update.
