Military Cancellation

I followed the steps in the link, submitted my orders and got a confirmation email.  My phone is unlocked and I was able to switch providers for my deployment.  Everything seems to have worked smoothly, however when I look at my account it now says "military" and also "SUSPENDED" in red letters.  I did the cancelation with number hold.  I think because I asked to hold the number the account automatically goes to "suspended" and not "cancelled".

I also have a note that says "Payoff requested. You've asked to make a final payment on your installment plan.  Here's the total balance for it."  Then on my payment schedule it says PENDING with the total I owe on my phone and it was scheduled for the day my military cancellation went through a couple days ago.

I definitely did everything correct and qualify for the installments to be paid off (past the 14 days buyer remorse, received orders after I received my phone, good standing, etc.).  I did this a few years ago and my phone was paid off by AT&T but I did not do the number hold and my account said cancelled not suspended.  If my phone isn't paid off I could have ported my number out and received a pretty good welcome bonus to a new provider overseas. So I'm really banking on the AT&T doing that for me.

I want to know if I should email [email scrubbed] and just have the account flat out cancelled without the number hold (I actually like my new number with my new provider)? Or is this standard and don't worry about it.  Like I said last time my account said cancelled and the phone was paid off immediately.

I know there is not technically a "military suspension" but now my account literally says military and then suspended, with my phone unlocked.

Thanks for the help!

Military cancellationwithnumber held.

Got email sayingconfirmed.
Phone wasunlockedtoo.
AT&T account now says “suspended

AT&T account also says “payoff requested” with a pending payment of myremaining balance

Question is, Does this seems weird or is it normal?

That seems very normal and exactly what you want.

You cannot request AT&T use military suspension  with number held, and at the same time port your number to a different service provider AND get out of your installment .

When you cancel service by porting your number to a different service provider you accelerate your installment which you now have to pay.

This has been discussed multiple times recently. Switching to a different service provider which will allow you to use your service overseas at no extra charge (whether it is Google Fi or Google voice) You still have canceled service with AT&T instead of taking advantage of SCRA as intended.

Unfortunately you cannot have both.  I wish you had asked your first because this has been discussed three or four times very recently and each time we have explained exactly the same.

Yes formalyknownas, which is why I made it clear in my post, multiple times, that I did not request to port out my number and to use the military cancellation. Before I switched I read about ten different posts, as well as doing this successfully on my own before.

Again, I did not port out my number and then try to do the military cancellation. This has nothing to do with porting out a number.

Military cancellation with number held.

Got email saying confirmed.
Phone was unlocked too.
AT&T account now says “suspended

AT&T account also says “payoff requested” with a pending payment of my remaining balance

Question is, Does this seems weird or is it normal?

I don’t want to get billed the remainder of my installments, especially when I could have kept my number and ported it out if I was going to get billed for my remaining installments regardless

Unfortunately communicating through the chat is completely useless.  They don't understand the military cancellation thing AT ALL.  I explained it like they were 10 for about 15 minutes and still kept giving me a link to the military cancellation and said any installments due upon cancelling I'll be responsible for.  Can you confirm they're real people now or are they legitimate bots?

Maybe this is all normal and the payments show up as "pending" for now for several days and then it'll be taking care of eventually.  I'm not sure, but I wanted to figure this out sooner rather than having to deal with a bill later and fixing all of this when I'm across the other side of the world.

There is a misunderstanding to how this all works.  And you absolutely cannot have it both ways.

You cannot have AT&T suspend your number and hold it for 39 months and Waive the rest of your installment payments per the SCRA

     AND

Port it to a different service provider.

These two things are mutually exclusive.

When a number is suspended and held, or canceled altogether is *not active* and therefore cannot be ported.

So your number had to be active when you ported it.  If it was active, it was not suspended or canceled with number held by AT&T.

As soon as you ported your number out that cancel your AT&T service and accelerated your installment which you now have to pay AT&T

I can continue to explain it six other ways, but you no longer qualify for the service person's relief act to have your remaining phone payments waived. And as far as I understand the military takes a very dim view of people not paying off their debts.

This was the sort of thing where if you had asked we would have explained it so at least you knew that you would have to pay off your phone in order to do what you are doing. (As I said it has come up several times lately)

*sigh*

@formerlyknownas

I’m really baffled at your lack of comprehension. Did you even read my post? Serious question

I. Did. Not. Port. Out. My. Number.

I. Did. Not. Try. To. Port. Out. My. Number.

I. Do. Not. Want. To. Port. Out. My. Number.

I would try to explain it to you “six other ways” but I’ll start with three. It’s pretty cut and dry. You are for some reason stuck on porting out a number and I legitimately do not know why.

Then what did you mean in your original post when you said you switched service providers?

Usually that means taking your phone number and using it with a different service provider...

No?

The only other reason AT&T would require you to pay off your phone is if you were still within the return window of 14 days, or if you purchased your phone after your deployment orders were issued.

from my original post—“I definitely did everything correct and qualify for the installments to be paid off (past the 14 days buyer remorse, received orders after I received my phone, good standing, etc.).”

and to reply to your question:

”Then what did you mean in your original post when you said you switched service providers?

I switched providers. IE I no longer have AT&T and now have google fi with a new number but same phone. They unlocked my phone no problem.

now that we are on the same page I understand this process thoroughly as I’ve done it before. What I’m confused about is my account saying “suspended” and saying “payoff requested”. From my earlier post:

Military cancellation with number held.

Got email saying confirmed.
Phone was unlocked too.
AT&T account now says “suspended

AT&T account also says “payoff requested” with a pending payment of my remaining balance

Question is, Does this seems weird or is it normal?
