AT&T Pole Fell On Truck - Due to theft of fiber

Hi AT&T

One of your poles fell on one of our company tractor trailers doing significant damage to the tractor.  Apparently, several poles in this Richmond Ca neighborhood have been pilfered of the fiber by thieves and poles unfortunately fell hitting vehicles including our company truck.

Our insurance company has reached out to AT&T on 2/22, and 4/3 via email and several calls with no follow up.  The adjuster is simply requesting information for the loss and a claim number.  If I could get some assistance due to AT&T being unresponsive I’d greatly appreciate it.

First you should remove your personal information: Name and Phone number!

How do you know these are AT&T Poles vs Utility Poles from a Electrical utility provider that just has AT&T in a shared use role.

Good question.  AT&T happened to be in the area servicing these poles and our Driver Manager spoke to the AT&T employee at the scene.

Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner of your initial post and Edit out your Personal Information.

Well we would expect AT&T Employees or Contractors to be restringing Fiber and any other AT&T services on these poles. Just look at any Existing Poles to see what is on the top strand. 95% chance it is your local Electrical Company and if that's what is on top then they own the pole(s). You will need to work with them concerning your Insurance claim.

Poles would be buried at least 6 feet underground….

are you saying the entire pole tilted out of the ground?

If the pole snapped at the base, ground level means something hit the pole snapping it.

However the strands from pole to pole support at least 3000 lbs.

Never heard of fiber being taken from poles, but have heard for past several years that copper wiring has been removed with some even dying in their attempt due to live voltage on the pole from the power lines.

If the pole was owned and replaced by the power company, ATT construction group would have been out to reconnect ATT lines to the new pole.

Recommend checking local police report(s) for previous damage to poles in that section.

If someone ran into the pole causing the initial damage to the pole causing the collapse suggests seeking out that individual insurance.

Too many unanswered questions…

from newspaper March 28, 2024…

https://richmondstandard.com/richmond/2024/03/28/suspect-in-richmond-seen-cutting-down-telephone-wires-in-broad-daylight/

Richmond police officers arrested a man who was allegedly seen cutting down telephone wires in broad daylight in the 1200 block of Castro Ranch Road earlier this week.

Police responded to the area on a report of a wire theft in progress. They quickly located and detained the suspect.

Officers found stolen wire and tools used to steal wire in the suspect’s illegally parked vehicle, police said.

AT&T estimated the suspect caused over $20,000 in damages to the phone lines. Telephone and internet access was also disrupted in the area.

“Incidents of wire theft have increased in the area,” police said. “We ask you to report any suspicious activity you see immediately. Thieves have targeted utility boxes, utility poles as well as buried utilities, all to steal copper wire.”
