Got conned into getting a second line, now my bill is $350 a month for just me.

Hi, all!

I purchased a new iphone 14 Pro Max and two brand new Gen 8 apple watches in December of 2022. I didn't purchase insurance because I have never broken a device, so I didn't believe that I would need it. In May of 2023, I was in a domestic situation resulting in one of my apple watches and my iphone being smashed to pieces. Both were unable to be fixed so I reached out to ATT to see what my options were. I was told to add insurance to my plan, which I did. However, I'm a single mom of 2 (at the time) kiddos and needed a phone. ATT told me to add another line and order a new phone that way. I was aware my bill would be $350 for a while. But a year later, I am still paying the same payment. ATT keeps telling me that I cannot pay off the broken phone (which I never upgraded because I have a phone now), that is attached to the number I have had for 10+ years, and transfer that number to the line on the new device I had to purchase. I CAN pay off the line/installment plan to my older device, but I will lose the number I have had for so long. They are completely unwilling to work with me, and I just don't have the extra funds to pay off the newer device, as I am a single mom to 3 (was pregnant during domestic dispute) and having been paying $350 a month for my bill. Anybody have any other options/ideas?

Thank you

You weren't really "conned" into getting the new line. You agreed to it 100%. It really was the only way you were going to get a new phone without paying out of pocket in full. It's also the option that benefited the employee, so they really didn't have any reason to talk you out of it.

Your best bet now is to find some way to pay off the remaining installments on the new phone so you can cancel the new line.

Adding insurance after the loss is insurance fraud. And very bad advice.

Since you cannot use the insurance, you can reduce your bill a little bit by canceling the insurance.

Adding a new line, and purchasing a new device was a terrible idea.  But whoever offered that to you saw a way to make an additional sale and pad their own commissions.  And because it's been a long time, there's now no option because you are way past the return window. Figure out how to pay off the new phone.

What should have been done is for you to purchase the cheapest iPhone you could get a hold of to replace the damaged one -at full cost

You probably could have picked up a refurbished iPhone or iPhone SE for just a couple hundred dollars.
