How to change the User ID when no one has access to the current ID?

I have been in an absolute nightmare situation for over 2 weeks now. My old roommate moved out and requested a transfer of billing responsibility over to me. I filled everything out but never was prompted to enter billing information or set up a User ID or Password. We have both spent hours on the phone with ATT-- the bill and account is in my name, but I have no access to the account. My email is linked to the account, but the User ID associated with the account is my old roommate's email that he no longer has access to because ATT closed his account. Now we're being told the only option is to cancel service and start service again but that it will take days, which I can't afford to do because I work from home. This should have been a 15 minute process. How in the world can we change the Member ID??

Have you created an online account yet? When you do a TOBR, a new account is created, so you'd have to create your own log-in credentials.

When I try to create an account/my own credentials, it tells me my email is already linked with an account, meaning my former roommates Member ID. (which I was able to figure out through using the “forgot user ID” function)  Same thing when I try to do the account number. One of the guys on the phone said that for whatever reason it closed his account and opened one in my name instead of doing a normal transfer— but my old roommates member ID is still linked to the account that’s now in my name.

I am also facing a similar issue. I am a new customer and my user id is overwritten by a “is this your ID?” Message, and when i hit forget my password, it never gives me a password replacement but instead ask me to enter password prompt for user id that i don’t recognize.

it emails my email, gives me validation code, then ask me to enter in my password but under a different account (“we detected a second login; Is this your user id?”)… but forget my password never gives me a password and i keep getting asked to put in passwords when I’ve never logged into att before.
