Odd delays when browsing / accessing internet from iPhone 6s+ over 5268AC Router wi-fi

I have consistently seen long delays / stalling when trying to access the internet from my iPhone 6s Plus when connected to our AT&T router 5268AC.  Every so often I'll browse to a web site, and the browser will just hang there -- sometimes for 10-30 seconds.  I've noticed if I were to turn off wi-fi on my phone, the browser instantly connects, so I know it's not the site I'm going to itself.

I've also seen issues when the iPhone wants to switch a voice call to use wi-fi -- if one of these "delays" occur during that process, then the call will disconnect.

I had an AT&T tech come out and he checked over everything, but didn't find a problem (though he did re-provision with the correct profile for the router).  I'm a software engineer with a decent technical background, and I don't see anything that on the surface would cause this.  All self-tests run fine.  Bandwidth looks great.  This is an internet-only router, no U-verse.

Any ideas?

Could there be some DNS issue?

It seems to affect my wife's iPad, too.  Not sure about my MacBook Pro, but I've seen some odd delays there, too.  Not as often because usually that MacBook Pro is connected via ethernet to a different and completely wired network.

OK -- I have a supposed solution!

AT&T techs have been puzzled for over a year.  However, we had another tech come out today, and he said that just this morning he had just heard about this issue affecting the Model 5268AC residential gateway / router: he ran some tests and said we have some sort of "legacy wi-fi device" that is "clogging up the wi-fi".  He showed me an AT&T test screen that even indicated as such, and the MAC address said it was our Panasonic Blu-Ray from 2012.  This is a device that wasn't even powered on, but was still connected.  My guess it would've been an 802.11g device.

It was no big deal to unplug the power to that device, but I'm still curious:  "Clogging up the wi-fi" seemed like a non-technical term.  Anyone ever hear of anything like this?

To recap, I haven’t had any speed issues:

SYMPTOM: We are connected to the VRAD via a fancy sort of DSL. Frequently, we will try to browse on one of our wi-fi connected devices (two iPhones, iPad, MacBook Pro, etc.). Occasionally, our browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) will just sit there, and take FOREVER to connect. Like 10 - 25 seconds. We will never get an error like we are not connected to the internet. If we refresh the browser, 9 times out of 10 our second request will immediately go through. If we switch off wi-fi on the phones / iPad, and use LTE, we also will always immediately connect and never have a problem. Our physical lines appear to be perfect, and our speed tests are always excellent (except for an absurd amount of buffer bloat).

When you refer to the “new software update”, is that recent?  My understanding is the router gets its updated automatically?
