So what you are all saying is that 'Don't Sync' means 'Sync' and 'Backup" means 'Sync then Backup'. That's not the way I learned English in school but then I'm old.

As noted, I'm on a Mac. And I just want iTunes to do what I tell it to do. If I plug in my iPhone to do a manual backup I don't want it to start a sync. I've done everything I can but hold a gun to its head but it still does the same thing every time.

The option is and has been checked, the application is periodically updated (which I believe on Mac involves a download and install) yet the behavior continues. As I understand it I am not the only one with this issue.

Thanks, it seems to have worked, but I still don't like, understand or trust iTunes. I made sure I have the latest version, did a manual backup, then restored to factory defaults, got the Your iPhone Is Unlocked message, then restored from my backup. But why, every time I plug my iPhone into the computer and launch iTunes, does it (iTunes) insists on performing a synch wh...

Thanks, jane697. The explanations I have received from you and others are helpful. So long as an iTunes 'Restore From Backup' operation works I guess I should be ok. If it doesn't I may have to go to the Apple store since our one Mac conversant tech has gone and I am now adrift in a Windows only operation at the office.

It is that re-authorization that completes the unlock. From that point, the only way to get the phone back to where it was is to restore from a backup. You can either do that through iTunes or through iCl...

After a confusing series of phone calls, emails and texts from AT&T "Customer Support" it appears I am now authorized to unlock the iPhone 4s I own. It is 2 1/2 years since the purchase and my AT&T account is current. I now have an email telling me that to unlock it I have to do a Backup and then Restore using iTunes. But (a) I don't trust iTunes to do much of anything ri...

I'm going to be sending the old(er) phone to a family member in Thailand. She'll need to h...

I've got an iPhone 4. I've ordered an iPhone 4S which will be an upgrade on that same number. If I activate the new phone will I still be able to upgrade the iOS to 5 via iTunes, or must I do that before activating the new phone?

I'm going to eBay a 3GS that has become redundant. I know how to wipe it but I am wondering if I should also remove the SIM card before selling it....or does the buyer reasonably expect it to come with a (deactivated) SIM card in the phone? I'm guessing I should remove it before shipping it but I thought I had best get a second, third and/or fourth opinion. Thanks.
