You may also want to try getting a hold of an unlocked phone. You'll pay full retail for them (unless you look on amazon.com or ebay or a similar place like that) but you'll have more freedom that way and you get some of the smartphone perks.

I'm actully less worried about the upgrade itself, and more so with the fact that I don't know if I'll get a letter, AND that ATT wasn't aware of this going on.

I've heard news reports and indeed people in my family have received letters in the mail from ATT notifying them that their 2g phones will soon be out of date and they are required to upgrade them to newer 3g phones to work on the 3g network.
