PROBLEM SOLVED! Once a helpful person at an AT&T store told me the secret of getting a live person for GoPhone support, I was able to change my number to a local one quite easily. In case anyone is wondering, here's the way. You call the 800 number in my previous message. Choose "more options" at the end of the first menu. Then during the second voice menu, say: "Customer ...

If the answer is to talk to AT&T customer service, please tell me how. The only contact numbers I can find are 611 from the gophone and 800-901-9878. Both go to the same GoPhone voice menus that do not have any obvious way to get a live person. Thanks.

I have an unlocked Sony Ericcson T715 that I use in France with SFR. I just started up with AT&T GoPhone here in the US. Walked into a Seattle store, got a SIM with some minutes, popped it in, and was good to go. The only problem (which I realized later) was the store never asked for my address.
