We have the old unlimited plan. It says that after 3 GB of 4G or 5 GB or 4GLTE. How do they determine which you are using? Is it your phone capabilities, or is it what network you happen to be in? I think I'm in and out of zones, so I'd have some data at slower speeds and some at faster speeds.

I just went back and reread some of the old posts. I realized that I was talking about 2 different phones without explaining. I was first trying to use my husbands old Galaxy Note 2. When that didn't work, I went to my old Galaxy S3. The phone that I did get to work, finally, was the Galaxy S3.

Hi FreeIndependent, Yes, even though you have unlocked the phone and are using SIM from a foreign carrier that allows use of the mobile hotspot, the software on the phone wants to connect to ATT to check the type of account you have. You have to get rid of that software. What I finally did was to totally redo all of the software on the phone. I had to root the phone, and ...

I would think it would be worth it to try updating by using the ATT SIM and Kies. Just be sure that you are on wifi. I doubt that the updated operating system will help with enabling tethering, though, if the ATT software that checks on the plan to see if it allows tethering is still present and the mobile plan does not allow it. I don't think it would hurt to try, though....

That's great to know. Are you able to tether? After all my work prepping my phone, I didn't get to use it in Italy. The plan for visitors allowed for phone calls and 2 GB of data but not for tethering. Or, you could get 5 GB of data for a mobile hotspot. I ended up using the 2nd option with an unlocked mobile hotspot device. It worked well and was easy to carry around with...

Thanks. I intend to turn off the data roaming and cellular data when I get there. I'll just have to send pictures via email when I'm on WIFI.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'll be leaving for Italy soon. Will receiving texts be charged against my regular domestic quota (200 messages) ? Will texts that I send be $.50? Will MMS be $1.30? Thanks.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I'll tell you what I finally did. Since this was an old phone that I'm not using anymore - except for trips - I finally just decided to clear the whole thing. It's now rooted with a brand new ROM. It's like having a new phone. Now, I can turn on the mobile hotspot. It doesn't get any data, yet, because I don't have a good ...

What I really need to know is how to turn off the ATT hotspot software and turn on the native capabilities. The phone does have native hotspot capabilities. It's a Galaxy Note 2

Thanks. The phone is unlocked and will accept a SIM card from another carrier. Will the phone allow me to turn the hot spot on when that card is in place?

Last summer we used EE in London. The SIM with 2G of data was 10 pounds, but that was a promotion along with a hotspot. It worked really well. A few years back I used one in Germany. It might have been Blau or 3. I can't remember. We also used A1 in Austria. I got that SIM from someone who had a lot left on their card and it was still valid. I had to go into an A1 store a...

Actually, I've found just the opposite. I can get a card with plenty of data for about $30 for the trip. In the hotel, they charged $35 per day per person for a wifi connection. It was totally worth the $30 for 2 weeks to always have the data right with me. It's great when you are out and about, as well. You can look things up on your cell phone. Really helps.
