AT&T doesn't track what you are using your data for just for security reasons. They will also just see the dates and times and the amount of the data transfer. I recommend downloading a data manager application (if using an iPhone the app that I use is the My Data Manager) and some of them actually calculate how much data you're using on and off of wifi.

There possibly could be an issue with your wifi connection where it is disconnecting at times and using the mobile network for things such as application updates, or using data for any applications that may still be running in the background.

Well, what type of phone do you have?  If you have an iPhone, they are known to turn off the wifi radio when the phone goes into "deep sleep" mode, so if you are streaming audio, and that happens, you are suddenly using cellular data instead of wifi for streaming your music.   There are other phones which have their own software issues where they may fail to use wifi when it's available.

Now, with those times being in 3 hour intervals between 6:00am and 9:00pm, I would lean towrds it probably being some sort of scheduled update or download happening in some application on your phone.  I know that the iPhone can do some scheduled downloads like downloading podcasts every 3 or 6 hours, so it is possible that your phone is setup to do these automated downloads, and they happen to occur when the OS has turned the wifi off to conserve battery.

These updates happen on my phone too and I do not have an IPhone or Podcast, not as much data but again at 9, 12 and 3PM, I cannot figure out why. My sons IPhone has huge amounts at these times.

If you have an Android phone, then you may have upps that are running in the background and consuming your cellular data as well.  I'm not as familiar with Android, but this is still a possibility.

One thing to consider, in some markets, AT&T will "accumulate" your cellular data usage in 3 hour "buckets" and post the total on the hour, so this may be why you are seeing a large chunk of data usage ever 3 hours.  It is really many smaller chunks used across the full 3 hours, but all lumped together for reporting purposes.

I really don't get what you are meaning by the 3 hour reporting thing. This is happening on an iPhone.

So over 2GB  of the 10GB I have is being used for reporting? That does not seem right

When you use data, AT&T doesn't recieve the report from the tower of usage in real time. When you have a mobile share plan, any data used between 12:00 am and 2:59 AM will show as being used at 3:00 am. Any data used between 3:00 am - 5:59 am as 6, 6:00 until 8:59 as 9, etc on through the day. So the times on those usage stamps means that the data you used was reported at that time, but used anytime between that report and the one prior.

Remember when you use data on wifi that anything connected prior to entering the wifi area may still try and connect using the network. For instance, facebook running in the background could continue using the data network once you reach wifi. I usually turn my phone off and back on or force close all my running apps when I enter a wifi zone.

That sounds good but that is not what the special je*k I just spoke to told me... I ask him how do I know that your billing me at 3am for useage from midnight to 3am and he said it could be from the 24 hour period and that "we don't have to give you anything to show what we are billing".

[Per Guidelines:  Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].  That is nuts that they can say they billed only one time for the same thing they are actually applying more than one time.
