Issue With Business Practice
On January 18th, 2018, I went to the AT&T location at 601 S Kings Drive, H, Charlotte, NC 28204 to upgrade my iPhone. After deciding to purchase an iphone X, I was informed by the salesperson, that there was an iPad promotional for $89 flat. When inquiring further about the special and explicitly asking about any additional fees or charges, the store manager and sales associate both assured me that there were no additional fees, monthly charges, etc., on the device; only the cost of it.
The AT&T manager, Ms. Lexi, and the salesperson, intentionally deceived and mislead me because when I received the monthly statement there was a $45 activation fee, $10 monthly charge for data, and, after I directly, clearly, and repeatedly stated I did not want an insurance and protection plan for my iPhone ($12/month) there was another $12/month fee added for the iPad! I have never carried insurance for any previous AT&T devices during the past 12 years.
When I received the billing statement and discovered the additional charges, I called the store manager to ask what could be done and the only answer I received was to cancel the plan but I would have to wait 90 days. Because this was an unacceptable response, I called AT&T’s customer service office and they agreed to terminate the plan that day BUT CHARGED ME $150. Again, the store manager either intentionally lied or deceived me because I do not believe she had no awareness of the policies.
All of this being said, and knowing previous experiences of my family members and friends, I firmly believe that this is a common occurrence at AT&T which is immoral and possibly illegal but certainly reminiscent of the recent Wells Fargo scandal. Therefore, I am requesting a refund of at least $229 on my next billing statement and if I do not receive this refund, I will have no option but to report your practices as a violation of the Unfair Deceptive Trade law and will report it to the Federal Trade Commission, Department of Justice Antitrust Office, my state and federal congressional representatives, the state attorney general’s office, local newspapers, publish my experience on business blogs, and anywhere/anyone else I can think of who may have an interest in this matter. Further, I expect the sales representative and manager be reprimanded for abuse of their positions and educated about the policies of AT&T.
I look forward to hearing your response and expect a reply within a week.

This is a customer to customer forum, not customer support. Your post here will likely not get a response from ATT. You need to contact customer support directly. You can contact the advanced support team through the forum by sending a private message to @ATTCares.

There are no additional fees for the hardware. That price is the price for the hardware itself. However all tablets sold at a subsidized price are subject to 2-year contracts for service. This is detailed in any and all paperwork, that must be signed by the end user, upon taking possession of any device.

Hello,
Please reread my question on this thread. I don't dispute what was signed, but rather the ethics regarding the situation. I directly asked the manager and associate if there were monthly fees associated with the device, beside the initial device cost of $80, and they both outright lied and said, "no." Please let me know what you can do regarding the circumstance where there was deception for a sale.
Thank you.

You should be aware the store in question is not owned by ATT. It’s a franchise store, the employees do not work for ATT.

especially for matters such as an illegal business practice. At the end of
the day it's a corporate function to regulate franchises and set standards
of business conduct.
