International calling with WiFi

To be 100% clear, If I am in international location and I have wi-fi calling activated, and I call a domestic number in the country where I am, this should not be considered an international call and it should be free since via wi-fi. Correct?

@mjs360 Not quite. If you call a local international number while on WiFi calling, it is the same as if you called that number from back in the US. You will pay applcable international long distance rates for that call. 

Well that is NOT clear at all to us layperson and really confusing as a consumer. I think it should be better explained by ATT or maybe they have no incentive as they want the high charge incurred to their benefit.

What I was saying is that it was not clear in general. For me "international calling" means you are in one country and you are calling a number in another country but in the scenario I was describing I am calling  a number in the same country where I am standing... so I would not think it is international by that definition. In my mind, using Wifi means I am borderless and a call into the same country where I am accessing the wifi would not mean "international" calling. Why would the phone need to go back all the way to a US based cell tower or anything US related when on the local wifi? That is what does not make sense.

Again, WiFi calling means you are connected to ATT’s cellular network through WiFi instead of through a cell tower. ATT’s cellular network only exists in the US. ATT does not provide service in other countries. If you connected to a cellular network in that country, then you would be roaming and pay international roaming rates. As long as you are using ATT’s network to place the call, it is the same as if your phone was in the US. Using your logic, if you were in another country on WiFi and called a US number, that would be long distance but it’s not. Calls to US numbers would be no charge. Sorry if you aren’t understanding, I don’t know how to state it any clearer.

Great article. Thank you. Basically don't use ATT for international calling or wifi calling as exhorbitant rates and always stick to FB Messenger or Signal or Apple facetime with phone on airplane mode. That will have no cost.
