How do I un-combine my POTS and cell phones?

I need to pay off the purchase price on one of my cell phones, but was told at the A T T company store that I needed to uncombine my cell phones from my home phone, then was told after the rep tried talking to 4 folks on her phone -it was not possible to do. Certainly it should be easy to do! Can anyone let me know?
