why can't I use my linked bank to pay off installment plans

I want to pay off 2 phone purchase installment plans early. following the online protocol provided by profile manage payments, etc, I  attempted to pay for them using my long-establish direct payment from bank that I use for monthly payments. For some reason, the only menu option for payoff of installment plans calls for registering a credit card. Why can I pay hundreds for monthly service via bank but not hundreds to pay off installment plans?

You can pay using a debit or credit card.  You cannot pay off a phone with EFT from checking.

It is what it is.  And it’s the same way with other carriers.

It use to possible to pay in person at a company store, I don’t know if that’s an option anymore.

Hello @professorbob!

It would be our pleasure to look into what payment options that are available!

When deciding to pay off the remaining balance of your device installment plan either by AT&T store or customer service, it would require a debit/credit card to continue the payment process. You can check out our Pay off Installment Agreement Article for more details and information.

We hope this helps, and have a good afternoon!

I'm aware of the website denial of any but credit card forms of payment. My
question is specifically why not for banking. Att takes hundreds/yr for a
host of services. Trying to complete a phone installment sale option
appears little different save the tangible nature of the unit. I really
just want to pay off the phone using a single account: ATT
Thank you
