Traveling to Canada with iPhone for a weekend? ...

Hey guys, we're pretty new to AT&T. In a couple months I plan to head from the U.S. to Toronto for a weekend. I've heard horror stories about people racking-up insane voice and data charges when traveling to Canada.

When I was with Sprint a few years ago we could add some kind of international plan add-on for something like $3.99 for a single month that completely covered us there.

Does AT&T offer anything similar? What are the options?

Thanks very much in advance,
Chris

Hello Community!

One of the most common discussions in the community is regarding traveling/calling to Canada and Mexico.

If you are planning a trip soon, please take a look at our forum post that outlines all the options available while traveling to Canada, Mexico, Cuba, and beyond.

If you've registered your account at myAT&T, you can add the international plan online as well.

Hi Chris,

AT&T does offer international services and it's a great that you're thinking ahead.

I suggest either stopping by an AT&T store or giving customer service a call to make sure the proper features are added to your account while you're traveling.

Pay specific attention to the data add-ons. Roaming plans like the World Traveler do not cover ANY data. The international data is very expensive(starting at 50MB for $25), but it's still cheaper than international pay-per-use. You are probably better off turning off cellular data and sticking to wi-fi while you're in Canada.

I added the international data plan for my trip to Canada ($30 for 50mb) but seem to only be able to access the Internet when I'm connected to WiFi. Whst's going on? Did I waste $30?

WoW !! It is year 2015......
Lots of change in Canada.
Making and receiving calls & text are much cheaper now with AT&T while roaming in Canada with Rogers wireless.
But using roaming data still cost a lot.

My suggestion to all my friends are if you coming up North only for a few days, and you really really need to use your phone, remember to turn off data roaming.
For data, use the free wifi in your hotel or free wifi in any public place

Most major airports in Canada got free open wifi for public use.
Burger places and coffee shops also got open wifi for public use,
some of them may need a  password , you can alway ask if you are a customer.

This only apply to major big cities in Canada, like Vancouver BC,Calgary AB,Edmonton AB, Toronto ON,Winnipeg MB, Regina SK, Halifax NS, Quebec QC,St. John NL etc etc.

If you go to Yukon or NWT the above do not apply

AT&T 'used' to have a good package ~ 10 years ago, which allowed you to roam / text and just use your 'minutes'  for $9.99/month.

It's been about 6 years since AT&T allowed me to use it.

Based on our experience, yes, you wasted $30.  I've done that twice, with exactly the results you got.

Sorry this is late, but others could use this information as a heads up.

I just got off the phone with AT&T International Support and here's what I found out:

For the userous fee of $30 a month you can get "extended roaming for Canada and Mexico for calls only (no data) OR, for the same fee you gan get 240 meg (I think) of data and phone is at $1.00 per minute. A ripoff indeed.

Remember this when it's time to renue your contract. AT&T is no bargain and I'm counting the days until my contract is done.

hi guys i just dont get it, somehow i confirmed in los angeles a contract, i actually wanted a prepaid card using outside of the country as well, but they told me i have to pay 60 usd, and would get all services included data, phone and roming in canada mexico all included for 60 usd - and the simcard itself is valid only 3 month, now i rechecked online, seems they made a sort of plan, until now i dont know what it is since online there is no info at all. i did not buy any phone i payed basicly a simcard. i hope the seller did not make a mistake, now i have to refund that otherwise they will recharge me every month, as it seems which i never confirmed, meaning its not listed in the sort of contract in europe this is considered illegaly if they say one thing and they take another one.
