Suspicious Text Message from ATT&T

At 4:57 AM This morning, I received two back-to-back suspicious looking texts from ATT&T: It came from the number 746 118-88. I removed the PIN but here is the message.

Why is this happening? I never initiated a PIN code request for login.

AT&T Free Msg: Please use this single-use PIN to complete your AT&T Messages login. We'll never call you to ask for your PIN. If you didn't request a PIN, call 800.331.0500 ASAP.

I have received 14 of these messages since Wednesday.  I have two-factor and a passcode on my account as well.  Super annoying to constantly receive these texts at all hours.

Blocking the number won't change the fact that someone is trying to hack into your account. You're just sticking your head in the sand if you do.

I would call ATT and disable the ability to check your SMS messages from their website because that's what the hackers are using to retrieve verification/two-factory authentication codes.

@frakman1

Just FYI, using the site/app to manage SMS/MMS messages has been protected by a 2-factor system, for quite some time (at least a couple of years now).

The 2nd factor is your phone-text, so there's no easy way to circumvent it (email is not an option to finalize setup, you have to have a text-code, to do send/receive of your texts, on either).

@MrsStofer

Yeah, this is (most likely) just someone spamming your account, the same as a call(s) would be.

I agree though, they're annoying.  14 is a lot, I'd file a complaint at donotcall.gov, this often stops these, for me (at least from that number).

We want to advise that you ignore that message, @etooley!

AT&T will never contact you by email, SMS, or recorded call asking for personal information. You should avoid replying to suspicious text messages or emails with your account details. To confirm whether your payment was successful follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Profile and select Billing & payment options.
  2. Under Payment options, select Manage payment activity & options to see your scheduled and recent payments.

Additionally, it's possible to use Star Services by pressing *225# (*BAL#), or *725# (*SAL#) for Spanish, from your AT&T wireless phone to get a text with your last payment details.

Also, follow these steps to report unwanted calls and text messages which can help us identify and block fraudsters, and you will want to check out this article to learn about extra actions you can take to protect your identity.

We hope this info helps!
