Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

I just got a call from a 1-800 number ending in 8804. It was a recorded message saying that my AT&T account had been flagged for security reasons, and to give the last four numbers of the social security of the account holder "after the beep" in order to avoid an interruption in service. It sounded very suspicious to me, so I hung up. It's not legit, is it?

Re: Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

I had this same issue today on 5/17/17 a call from my own number, asking for my last 4 digits of my ss# then my pass code for my voicemail, I called my mother who is a straight talk cell user and within 5 minutes of me calling her to inform her of it she received the same automated call even though she is a non at&t customer.

Scammers wanting last 4 SSAN hoping you did not change your initial passcode.

Re: Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

It's a scam. I got a call from my own number today too. Answered it and it was a recording and that they needed last four. I entered a fake one two times both different and the second one they took and then asked for my pin number I entered two different ones and the second one they took and hung up. Haha good luck getting anything with that.

Re: Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

Might have an answer for everyone about what some of these calls are. I also just received call with ID showing my number. When answered it said was ATT and to enter my S.S.#. My first thought was h*ll no and hung up. Then went online to this forum and assumed it was a scam. Thinking somebody might be making international calls. Went to my ATT account web page on laptop and signed in. Seen a message in my inbox. Message said I need to add a passcode to increase my account security. When I clicked on the message the next screen asked for last 4 of SS# and password. When entered those it said to make a passcode (which is different then password) 4-8 characters. I did that and went to another screen with my account number and blank spot for passcode. Entered that and all done.

Hope this helps explain why receiving phone call. Not to say scammers are not using this method so I personally would not respond by phone. Instead go to your ATT account online and see if you have the same message in your inbox  and follow directions.

Re: Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

I had the same thing happen to me 2 days ago! It said it was call coming from my name & number "+ 2 more calls"....recorded msg asking for my SSN. I thought it was super fishy. I had been on a long AMTRAK train ride & was on the street outside a pretty empty  train station when I received the call. I know this thread is old but, was curious if anybody knew if this was done remotely i.e. is the person nearby cloning your phone? I'm really curious. Also more importantly, once somebody does this can they access other info on a passcode locked phone? Do I need to change all my passwords etc. etc.? I really hate doing that but then again don't want this to become a bigger issue. Thanks for any insight!

Hello @Luluna and Community,

There has been a lot of great discussions around this topic, and we wanted to take a few moments to share some information that will help you determine what is and is not a scam. As a note, we recommend not sharing your Social Security # with anyone that calls you.

Phone scam tactics
Phone scams can be difficult to detect, so pay special attention to calls that:

  • Request that you verify personal data (such as your Social Security number).

Re: Scam? Call "from AT&T" asking for SS#

My husband and I each just got the same call. My Cel rang and my number showed up as the caller. I called AT&T and they said I have to speak to the fraud department, " you have to call tomorrow because they are closed now". I guess fraud only happens from 8am to 4 pm!

I  called AT&T and they said it was a scam and that I should call the fraud department tomorrow because they're closed right now. I guess fraud only happens from 8 AM to 4 PM!

That's called number spoofing. There's nothing AT&T can do about it and there's no fraud involving them. As long as you didn't give the caller any information, there's nothing more to do.

Hopefully they'll get the idea soon and move on to other numbers.

I received the same call from my own number, there was a recording saying there were from AT&T that my phone was flagged and they need to verify the last 4 digits of my S.S.  I hanged up immediately, but now I'm concerned if they hacked my phone or my info. Any advise???
