Rewards card valid in Mexico?

Twice I have tried to use my never-used AT&T Rewards Card here in Ensenada, Mexico and both times the response has been "emisor denego el cargo" or "charge denied by issuing office."

So, is my $100 Rewards Card not valid for use in Mexico?

Hello @PanchoBarleyMan.

The Reward Card (“Card”) is a non-reloadable Visa or MasterCard branded prepaid card issued by U.S. Bank National Association (“U.S. Bank”).

You may obtain balance and account information online at the website printed on the back of the card or by visiting AT&T Rewards Center. You may also contact
customer service by calling the phone number printed on the back of the card.

We suggest calling U.S. Bank and let them know about your travel plans. Banks and credit card companies keep track of spending patterns and may deny an unexpected transaction in Mexico.

Hello @PanchoBarleyMan,

That's a great question. After activation, your rewards card
may be used to purchase goods or services at any merchant that accepts Visa or MasterCard debit cards. Transactions made in a foreign currency will be converted into U.S. dollars under the rules of Visa USA or MasterCard, as applicable. We will charge a fee of 3% of the transaction amount for transactions with merchants located outside of the U.S., even if currency is not converted. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thanks for the response which unfortunately doesn't explain why the card received the same response at 2 different places here - "charge denied by issuing office."

Now that means it was blocked at your end, right?

So, what to do?

Hello, @PanchoBarleyMan,

Any denial of the charges would come from the financial institution that covers the card. There is an international Transaction Fee which would be charged on the card that will change the amount and might possibly cause the card to become overdrawn and denied. That fee is usually 3% of whatever the cost would be in US dollars.

You: Any denial of the charges would come from the financial institution that covers the card.

Me (no colors or other fonts in this "Rich Text" layout?): 'er, isn't that AT&T?

Me: Overdrawn? A chance would be a fine thing! 🙂 I've not been able to use it yet, so it should still have the original $100 balance.

Look on the back of the card it will tell you who issued the card.

The last line on the back of the card says "This card was issued by and is the property of teh U.S. Bank National Association...". I've attached a pic to show.

Despite being told on this forum that the AT&T Rewards card is valid worldwide, after chatting with Alexis of the AT&T Reward Center Customer Service I have learned that "...these cards are not valid outside of the United States."
