Don't need phone but want to keep number. What do I do?

I'm paying for a shared data plan right now, 6 gig/mo. The dilemma I'm having is that I don't really need my data, or phone for that matter. How do I go about canceling my data plan, but keeping my wife's phone on a plan AND keep my phone number for later? Right now I have a work smart phone that I forward all my calls to from my personal number. There's really no reason to keep paying for 2 lines. Both phones are bought and paid for. I just don't want to give up my personal number; I've had it for years.

You could port the number to google voice.

That'll probably work. Thanks!
