On Wed. 6/22/16 my brother called me about something that happened with his cell phone (that is on my account). He said it rang at abut 9:20pm and caller ID showed his number - he answered and heard somethinig along the lines of "this is AT&T Security and the account is flagged we need last four of the primary account holder social security number" - so he hung up and told me.
Last night (Thursday 6/23/16) at 9:17pm I received the same call and it showed my cell # as the caller ID. I entertained the call by entering a fake 4 digits for the ss#. It then said it was incorrect and it beeped like a voicemail beep. So, I entered the same 4 bogus digits. Then, it asked for the passcode of the primary account holder so I entered a bogus 4 digits. Same thing - it said incorrect and beeped so I re-enetered the digits. It then said that the flag has now been removed.
I immediately called Care who did nothing except refer me to the Fraud group at 877-844-5584 but they were closed at 9pm. I just called that number today and they were unable to do anything as they explain they deal with things like subscription fraud.
Nonetheless I posted the scam to my Facebook just so others would be aware (although I don't think they would be stupid enough to give up their personal information). A couple of my friends said that they have received the same call in the past couple of weeks. I hope you guys can find 'em and shut 'em down! Thanks.

Hi there @RakkmUp
Thank you so much for letting us know about these calls. You did well by not providing any information.
Spoofers and Fraudsters try to get you to provide personal information in an attempt to gain access to your account. As you know AT&T will never contact you directly and ask you for any personal account information either by calling, text or e-mail. You can find out more about what we are doing to stop these fraudsters, as well as what you can do to help prevent it by visiting our security site.
We are working hard to stop these spoofers and fraudsters and we will continue to do so.
A few things to keep in mind with spoofers and fraudsters:
As you mentioned, if called you do not want to provide any of your personal information, either by an automated system or otherwise.
A few other items to be aware of if you should run into them:

Again, thank you so much for bringing this up so more of our community members can be aware of this.

These guys are STILL at it. My wife and I each received a call from our own cell phone numbers stating a security flag had been placed on our account and requested the last 4 digits of SSN. I hung up. This happened today, 9/20/2017. Get em Dano!!

Same thing just st happened to me and reflexively I just coughed up the last 4. Not exactly sure what my exposure might be but I spent 45 minutes or so on the phone with customer service rep. Changed security passcode. Also locked down the account. No wireless purchases, no charity donations via text messaging, no simm card changes, no device trade-ins nothing. Not sure what else I can do.

The same thing happened today with me-cell phone rang showing my number. I answered &recording said ATT security & asked for the 4 social# of primary user-I just hung up. I have Verizon as carrier and haven't had AT&T in years...callerid says Xfinity home which we have....

Ok, so I recently got the same call. It stated the same things- "give up your social security number for security reasons"- blah blah. Just ignore it and immediately hang up. I actually just blocked my own number and I'm hoping it works.
Especially considering the time of night in which I received the call- led me to believe that my phone had been hacked.
Anyways, since we're near Christmas- these type of things will happen- so just stay on the lookout, use the right apps and websites and stay safe. Don't give your last-digits of your SSN to anybody (or any digits for that matter), especially since those are the most important digits of your SSN and provide easy access to your information.
But yeah, thank you for your posts-they helped me subside this fear and made me become aware of such things. Stay safe !

This just happened to me!! so weird to get called after 11p! I was curious how my phone was calling me, so I answered. It displayed my married name, and I've been divorced for almost 2 years. Anywho, I just hung up after it asked for the last 4 of the ssn. NOT TODAY!

I get these sometimes. I also get spammers spoofing AT&T's 800-531-5000 number.
A good solution would be to display ANI info instead, since Caller ID info is untrustable and easily spoofed and is the scammers best weapon.

I received the same call today...I just hung up but maybe should have played along

My husband and myself just received this call. Him first, then immediately me afterwards. He hung up because he thought it was weird.....I gave the last 4 because I was thinking maybe I would be locked out of our AT&T email?! We haven't had At&t cell service in probably 6 or so years, may be longer, but still retain our AT&T email address. I guess I'll just keep a close watch on my accounts and my credit and make sure there are no red flags.... has anyone actually seen or experienced any repercussions to giving the last 4 of their social to these scammers?!

Same thing just happened to all 3 people in our house, all with different cell phones. And to a local friend of mine. All on AT&T.
