ATT rep offered me TREK 2 HD Tablet for free, but charged $40 activation fee and $10 monthly fee

Couple of months ago, when I was chatting with a representative of att about my wireless plan and direct tv plan, he offered me a deal of a tablet. Upon asking him, he said that customers with multiple services with att and direct tv, they are giving away free tablet for those customers. I told them I am not interested because I don't use tablets. He said it's free and you won't be paying anything for it. Then I asked him what tablet will i get, he said Att Trek 2 HD. He said it's the best tablet they are offering. I said I don't need it. Then he said that it's totally free. Then I asked him about the monthly fee and the activation fee because I knew there has to be a catch. Then he replied back that no there are no fees. IT IS FREE. Then I agreed. so I got the tablet. and I switched it one when i received it. It was andriod operated and I didn't use it. so it was there in the living room. Then after couple of weeks later, I got the monthly bill. Got charged $40 for activation of the device and $10 for 1 GB monthly fee for that TABLET. Then I called att and explained them about my issue. They said they will take a look at it and get it sorted out. They never got back to me and im still paying $10 monthly for that piece of crap. I have contacted them many times after that, and now they say that I have to pay a termination fee of $150 for the line. FTW??? One of the rep even told me to sell that tablet privately and use that money for the termination fee. Who will buy that piece of crap tablet for $150????

So they are saying that they don't have the chat history of the first conversation I had when the att rep offered me the tablet for free. They said they need some sort of reference code. And I even gave them the time and date of the conversation I had online. And they still told me that they cannot retrive the chat history. They are not being help full at all. They are stealing from me and I can't make them stop.

As any business no one is ever going to offer something completely FREE without their being benefit to the company. Anytime you are being offered a free device from a cellular SERVICE company there will be terms. You get the EQUIPMENT free but in return have to accept the terms and conditions. If you did this by phone they were emailed to you along with a customer service summary outlining the monthly service charge and one time activation fee. You accepted those terms otherwise they don't ship the equipment. They even send video bills now so people can't say they didn't or couldn't read all the terms and conditions.

My experience is identical to yours. I have no record of terms and conditions being sent to me and subsequently no record of any agreement on my part to accept the charges. Spoke with various at&t employees for over two hours. I was ultimately was told that they only send products if the T&C are agreed to but that they could not provide me with any documentation detailing my acceptance only a summary document that I also have no record of receiving. Completely dishonest practice. Was actually informed that going to mediation was my only recourse.

By the way I called to lower my bill and it only ended up being higher and I was just told it would take a couple billing cycles for it to show on my bill still hasn't happened and I now know it NEVER will only going to pay all 5 phones I have off and go to another company didn't want to cause Ive been with att (bellsouth) for over 20 years. Should have never made that call on that day.

I'm sick of this "Oh we're terribly sorry that this happened to you, sir!" attitude. Obviously the store reps are instructed to give out these "free" tablets and AT&T probably figures that they will make a killing regardless of how many people catch onto the unexpected charges. Same exact thing happened to me.

[Please keep it courteous.]

The same thing happened to my mom. I feel awful and feel like she was scammed. While signing up for Directv, a man told her that for signing up, she was eligible for free TREK 2 HD Tablets and that she would only have to pay the taxes. She asked him repeatedly if there were anymore fees and he told her no and that activation was optional. She ended up getting a few to give to her grand kids and now she is in a whole mess of trouble trying to undo this. She was on the phone for 2 hours yesterday with at&t and got switched back and forth between about 10 different people (none of whom were any help). I don't know how to help her! this company is intentionally taking advantage of people and stealing their money!
