GPRS is an acronym for General Packet Radio Service.
To keep it simple: it's some sort of data usage on your phone. Such as internet, email, picture messaging within a text, applications on the phone, etc...

I also noticed these charges and it drained my balance fast!
My pre-paid plan doesn't have data plan, and I never used my phone for browsing, (I am sure because my iphone's WIFI functions is broken).
Someone sugges go to iphone->setting->general->Network->Cellular Data (I turned it to OFF!).
Now I just refilled my plan, and keeping an eye on the charge.
The thing I don't like is, I don't have data plan, why they are charging this GPRS data? This is kinda recent to me, it didn't happend to me several months back.
Anyways, this is bad. There are some claim sites, and you maybe able to get refund.

it seems those charges are from applications that is synced on your phone, everytime it updates it uses data.
You did the right thing to turn it off.
GPRS is 2G used by earlier iphones, you can switch from 3G to 2G to save battery when calling. but 2G is not available on Iphones 4 up
