USPS phone damage

Help!

I am looking for some assistance and feedback on this, I am having a big problem and can not afford this.

My phone stopped powering on, so I took my original phone to a depot to be replaced locally, this was fine but then the next day my new phone stopped working. The screen would not come on. I immediately placed it in a otterbox commuter case with a screen protector, so I know there was no damage.

AT&T shipped me a new phone, after an hour on the call. I got it, and shipped back the old phone. However, I received my phone back with a large crack in the screen stating it was damaged when I shipped it. It was not!

They said there was nothing they could do, and I would be on the hook for $600..... Could I file a USPS claim on this? The reps weren't willing to help at all, and there is no way I can pay $600, this is going to cripple me. They won't accept my old phone back either. I let them know I would not of sent back a damaged phone when I could of replaced the screen for $100, no way I am risking paying for a new phone. I feel so lied to by the rep, and no help at all.

ATT rep also said they had pictures of the box in pristine condition, which when I got it had a hard corner completely ripped off, and I taped it shut. Even then, with these boxes my screen is right against a taped layer, all it takes is something heavy on it to push on the box. It doesn't need to be completely crushed to crack a LCD screen. Help please.
