Pay As You Go data pricing is ridiculous?

Pay As You Go data pricing is ridiculous?

I am a light user and consider using ATT's pay as you go plan since it seems the best.

However after some calculation, I found the data part is ridiculous.

1c/5KB=200c/MB=$200/100MB. It's about 30 TIMES of normal pricing. For example, Lycamobile  6.6c/MB, Airvoice 6c/MB.

I don't think I will use data but I am afraid I will accidentally use it and get owned. How exactly to avoid data usage? Can I cancel it and just use voice and text?

I've never tried to put a data block on a Pay As You Go plan, I've always used phone's abilities: either turning the data off when using PAYG in a smartphone or breaking the APN settings for data in a feature phone. You could always try calling/going to a store and asking for a data block.
