Nokia Lumia 520 Problem: Although I would get Missed Call notifications/icons, there would be no indication of whether I was getting any voicemail messaged left for me (i.e., there was no "cassette" icon appearing). Folks, I've been to many forums, etc.--searching for the answer to this. I was working with an AT&T rep for about 30 mins yesterday--without luck (and was given notice to expect a call-back later this week). In the meantime, one of the places I went spoke of a software update solving the problem: settings>phone update>check for updates (be sure to have a good wifi source and fresh charge). Problem solved. I'm a happy camper. I think this phone, my first into the world of smartphones, will be a fine addition to my life.

I'm glad you were able to get your issue resolved, and I hope you're enjoying everything about your new smartphone. This is the thing about smartphones, since they're pocked size computers and run some very sophisticated software, there might be bugs sometimes, but manufacturers and developers constantly work on addressing them as well as adding new features via software updates.

I purchased a brandnew Lumia 520 on 3/23/2014 and transfered a SIM card from my old device (I didn't make any change with my GoPhone plan). I noticed on 3/24/2014 that I didn't get a voicemail notification, even though someone called and left a voicemail after the new Lumia 520 was activated.
Just like RetMil, I browed many forums for a solution but no luck. I reset the device to the factory setting for a couple of times and everytime I checked and installed updates. But still, my Lumia 520 does not indicate the little cassette tape icon on the phone tile when there is a new voicemail. (It shows a number of missed calls, though.)
I cannot afford to miss another voicemail, so I really need this problem solved.

Sounds like the line isn't provisioned for visual voicemail. Can you call 611 (on the phone) for a customer rep, and have them check?

I've got the same problem, no notification of voicemail messages, and it's already cost me three gigs I missed out on, and so I am NOT a happy camper! I've done the software update, but it always tells me I'm up-to-date. I called AT&T today, spent an hour, hour and a half on the phone, and they say they've sent up to a technical support specialist, and it should be fixed within a few days.
Plus, I tried to access the voicemail notification option in settings via phone, but ATT's settings voicemail was all messed up! It would tell me I have quick prompts, and to change it hit this or that number, and then it stopped! No option to keep and continue, to go to another setting, nothing, a dead end! Not the way I wanted to spend a Sunday afternoon.
I also wonder why there's no option to have an audible notfication of a text message that can repeat at certain time periods. If we don't hear the brief sound the first time, that's it. Even the cheapest "dumb phones" let you have the sound repeat every minute or longer, so you know you've got a message, but I don't see that option here, and again , why not?
