Assuming you got the iPhone 5 as an upgrade, and it's only been 5 months, you would likely have to pay full retail price for the 5s.

No I didn't I had gotten my contract with the 4s and then I upgraded to the 5 but I paid retail price for it.
you can find out if you are eligible for a early upgrade through MyATT, check the upgrade status. Since you paid full retail for the 5 it will be based on the remaining contract on the 4S if it was subsidized.
Early upgrade (if eligible) is discounted price of the phone + 250.00 early upgrade price + 36.00 activation.
