It does use data.  As for how much data it uses, that will vary based on how many messages you send.

Each message sent/received  is one byte per character you type, plus maybe 16 or so more per message.

 

Likely that's a 100 or so bytes per message sent/recived on average.

 

There's a small overhead for "presence" type messages, let's guess those are on the order of 200 bytes per hour.

 

So, if you chat, sending/receiving 100 average size messages in an hour, that's 200*100*100 or about 2MB. Obviously more chatting would be higher, less lower, but that's somewhere around 100 hours of chat on the 200MB plan, or more chat than could fit in a month on the 2GB plan.
