unlocking iphone 3

I have been given a Iphone 3 that was purchased in America but has a Australian SIM card in it.  Without knowing this I  attempted to update it on ITunes and know the phone has been wiped and can only be used for emergency calls. The last message I received was "unsupported sim card".  Can I still unlock it and how can I do this???? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

A simple search of these forums or on google would have provided the answer.

This question gets asked and answered daily... there has never been and unlikely ever will be an official way to unlock US sold iPhones.

AT&T will not unlock iPhones for anyone for any reason.

Find unofficial and unsupported methods if you want/need it unlocked.
