i am etting my dads iphone 4 when he gets the iphone 5 nown i have useing the iphone 3GS do i need a new sim card

The 4 uses a micro-SIM, which is smaller than the SIM in the 3GS. While you can cut the 3GS SIM down and use it, it's probably best to just get a new micro-SIM to use in the 4.

ATT will most likely give you a SIM for free if you are switching phones.
