I've had about 3 different phones aready. iphone was good in most places but don't seem as quick as 850mhz for some reason. tried it in california and it was great, super fast. 2 htc poor signal at my house area. right in the corner of an intersection.

Try turning off the 3g on your phone and see how that works.

Albuquerque should have great coverage!

Short answer, Never.

AT&T doesn't own any spectrum in the 850Mhz range.  It is all owned by Verizon and I don't see them releasing any spectrum to AT&T thus they are using only 1900Mhz spectrum.  Indoor coverage can be lackluster using this frequency though.

California is a completely different build.

1.  There's a LOT more customers

2.  There's typically more spectrum (850 + 1900)

3.  There's typically higher cell density (due to item #1)

When I went throught NM (Albuqueque to Santa Fe to Taos), AT&T's coverage wasn't the best (quite a while ago) in the state, but decent in Albuquerque, but almost unusable in Santa Fe.
