When both 3G and wifi are available, which one is being used?

I have wifi on my BB 9700 and also have the data package ($5/10MB).  If I go into a Starbucks with both 3G and wifi turned on, and access the internet, which will be used?  At the AT&T store, they says the wifi will be used and not 3G, but from my account, it appears that my data MB is being decremented.  Do I need to turn 3G off before I use the internet with wifi?  That would be a nuisance but it is better than being charged for usage when I don't need it.  Thanks!

You can just turn off (3G) data, so that you can still receive phone calls.

If I turn off 3G don't I turn off both data and phone?  On the BB 9700, I don't see how to enable phone w/o data.  It's just one choice, AT&T 3G.  Please clarify for me.  Thanks.

Read p. 240 of the BB 9700 manual, under "Turn on or turn off data service or set roaming options". If you don't find any info, contact AT&T directly or post in the BB forum.

That was a good idea, but I just tried it.  Turning off data services also turns off wifi so I can't use this option.  Thanks for trying.

Happy to have tried. You may want to look for RIM apps that would work for you. Good luck.

I seem to recall the BB can auto switch between wifi and 3G/2G/Edge. So the trick may be to sit near the wifi access point so that wifi is stronger than cellular signal. You may also set the wifi sleep policy to NEVER.

When both Wi-Fi and 3G data are being used on your phone, your phone will typically look to operate on Wi-Fi first, and then 3G should the need be. The 3G acts sort of as a backup signal for Wi-Fi if it starts to lose a connection.

It is definitely a good idea to deactivate the data network (if you can figure it out) before you turn Wi-Fi on. That way, you can ensure that none of your monthly data allowance is being used up wastefully.
