Silly question, what is a soft key?

I am looking over the information on my new Samsung Evergreen phone and it mentions the soft key. What is it and how do you use it.

The soft keys are the buttons that look like lines/dashes. The left one on the front of the phone is above the "SEND" button. The right one is above the "END" button. There are also two on the slide-out keyboard - the up and down dashes that are the outermost buttons.

A picture for reference, I'd necessary: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTxm9fE2zyd39lcdCyL2X45kpS-5iVpsZKeQMJBEsoroA3Mg8MGJg
