The it was explained to me it will be 4.2 they're releasing and not 4.1.2. Could be a big part of why it took so long if this is true.

4.2.2 for the GS3 has been indefinitely delayed by Samsung, due to various issues. If AT&T really decided to forgo 4.1.2 (in spite of what the reps have been posting), then GS3 owners shouldn't expect an update until the end of the year. However, I believe you were given wrong information.

I don't think info like that would be written down erroneously in a report, this guy wasn't a csr either. They did say weeks plural. The timeframe would fall within your range of estimate. If everyone else will be farther along why would AT&T risk further customer outrage by only releasing 4.1.2.? It doesn't matter to me as I have an S4 now and rooted my S3. I was just passing along what I learned.

At this stage of the game, AT&T needs to concentrate on doing damage control, as the fallout from the 4.1.2 fiasco has already done enough to undermine their credibility when it comes to updating flagship devices. In a way, I guess AT&T is already in damage control mode, offering sizeable discounts on upgrades to customers who wouldn't otherwise be eligible. As I've mentioned in the other thread, this is a definite sign that AT&T is aware that it screwed the pooch with this update.

What really surprises me is that this situation is not receiving any coverage at all in the tech blogosphere. AT&T just needs to release 4.1.2 and hope that everyone forgets about this (not likely on both fronts).

I just today wrote something about the 4.1.2 update for the GS3 on AT&T's facebook page and I got a generic response from them saying please stay tuned it is in the works. Lol what a joke.

I totally agree. If they would have at least came out and gave a statement, explained what the problem was/is this wouldn't have been so bad. It wasn't hard for me to get the upgrade after I explained that t-mobiles 4.1.2 ported ROM worked fine. (Possible tip for someone). Be polite but firm and explain your concerns and issues then ask if they are offering an upgrade to a secure device. Worked for me and when they finally do get it sorted I still have my s3. It does make a good backup phone and it's kind handy to use up the battery on it surfing the web and such.

Here is the truth. I called ATT and they blamed iy on Samsung not sending them the update to be released to their clients. So I contacted Samsung and they told me that they released the update to Samsung and its up to them to nlw to release it to us. [Per Guidelines:  Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].

This is true. Samsung released it months ago, they always release this info on their product pages so people will know it has been handed off to the carriers.

I would kind of like to know myself why AT&T never gets the updates out. Of course my opinion doesn't matter but It's a shame that in order to get the full functionality of you phone that you paid through the nose for, you have to root it and install a 3rd party ROM or switch to a carrier that has the features enabled and unlock the phone and get a new SIM. Why in the world would you disable features that are native to the phone and would actually make it function better. It seems that keeping the customer happy is not really the goal of the company anymore. It's all about money. And that's all it's about. Making the maximum amount of money for the least amount of service. It's the American way! That's why all the really good stuff is only available overseas. I will definately look into a switch once my contract is up. And I will not sign another contract. If they want me as a customer I will go month to month.

Finally got it in mine after flashing back to stock. Now after updating to 4.1.2 and rooting phone back, it says on Kies Firmware not supported.  So anyone know if this is because it is rooted or are you all getting this after update.

I don't get it either..  KIES says my 4.1.1 is the latest version as well, and IT'S NOT.  I tried the time hack where you change the time then update again, but now it says I have like 100,000 hours before I can check again, and it's up to date (when again, no it's not).  Before that it kept saying software update has been interrupted.  Now it won't even let me change the time either.. it keeps going back to todays date.  You CAN'T CLEAR DATA on at&t update service.. that is greyed out as well.  What can I do?  When will this be on KIES?

Ok so here is some good news for those of you who got hosed using the time change trick..  Just root the phone, install titanium backup pro, and then wipe the data on the AT&T Software Update app (it allows you to do it through the titanium backup pro app)..

After a reboot, sure enough it said software update interrpted and it will try again in 48 hours..  Then I tried it again and it said software is up to date and I can check back in 24 hours..   So long story short, still no update, but at least I got the timer back to normal without having to wipe the phone.   Always a good idea to do a full backup to your google drive account anyway since you now have root and Titanium pro..  It's worth it.  Just always restore to the same rom / android version if you are going to restore, and THEN update to the new version, then re-root (if you want to keep root)

[Edited to comply with Guidelines]

Update the Software for the Samsung Galaxy S III (i747) to Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)

Update summary

On July 31, 2013, AT&T and Samsung released a software update for the Samsung Galaxy S III (i747). This software package updates the baseband version to I747UCDMG2, and is available for download via Wi-Fi.

Software update includes

  • Multi Window: You can open two different apps at the same time into two different windows on the mobile screen.
  • Auto Share Shot with NFC: By setting the camera to "Auto Share Shot" mode, you can quickly share your photos and videos by simply tapping their GALAXY S III with other NFC and S-Beam enabled devices
  • Camera features: Paper artist and best face options.
  • AT&T apps: AT&T services, Drive Mode, AT&T Locker; Family Map, Live TV, and SmartWifi have been loaded.
  • Other enhancements:  Includes calendar, SD Card, and S-Voice enhancements.

What to expect after the update

Although there should be no impacts to settings or data, we recommend that you back up your media files to an SD card, a PC, or using a favorite application (from the Play Store), prior to upgrading the software. For information on backing up and restoring your phone using Samsung Kies, click here.

How to update

Customers will receive an alert and be prompted to download the update, or have the option to initiate the update manually. When prompted, you can postpone the update up to 3 times, and 4 hours per occurrence. After the update has been postponed for the maximum allowable time, your device will automatically download and install the update.

  1. To initiate the update manually, from the home screen, press the Menu key, and then tap Settings.
  2. Scroll to and tap About device > Software update > Check for updates.
  3. Tap OK.
  4. The device will determine if new software is available, and begin downloading the software update.  Once complete, the device will restart.
  5. Please wait until your device reboots completely, and then tap Done to finish.

How to verify the update

  1. From the home screen, press the Menu key, and then tap Settings.
  2. Scroll to and tap About phone.  The following information will be displayed:
      • Android version: 4.1.2

I'm very happy with the update. Multi view is very convenient. Ingress doesn't freeze up on me and text copied to the clipboard isn't randomly restarting my phone.
It's interesting though that a few days after the update my SD card comes up as damaged and days to try reformatting. Good thing I back stuff up...

Dmitriy,

Some users have been unable to connect to the OTA server(s), when will the update be given back to Samsung to make available through their KIES software suite? I believe this is also an issue with the latest update for the Galaxy S4 as well (based on some comments in that thread)...

Thanks,
-Steve
