No Service on iPhone 3gs

Hi everyone, I have a really big problem and could use some help. For about 2 weeks now my 3gs has been losing bars and going to no service like once every 30 minutes. Its not jailbroken or anything like that, its regular. I've looked on the internet and read every fix I could find (reseting network connections, switching 3g off, airplane mode) and none of them have worked. The apple store says I'm out of warranty so they can't do anything. Can anyone PLEASE help me!

I have been having the same issue over the last couple weeks.  I contacted ATT and we went through all the technical reboot and stuff as well as switching my sim card into my brothers iPhone to make sure it wasn't the card.  I was sitting next to him on his 3gs he had 5 bars and mine said no service or searching.  This is the only phone that I have and I cannot rely on it with 3 small children I worry if something happens I don't have service.  I also contacted apple and went through all tech support and reboots with them as well with no resolve.  I also recently had a remote started added to my car with control from my iphone and am dissappointed that I can't use it because of a lack of service.  I have been with ATT for 16 years and am not eligible for an upgrade until Feb 20 when they say I can get one for 199...but they are not willing to help me now.  I am very disappointed in the customer service I have received over the last several weeks.  I saw on the news today that Verizon may start to carry iphone service at the end of the month, I am considering making a switch since ATT does not seem to want to keep me as a customer.

Good luck and if you get resolution please keep me updated Smiley Happy

What you describe is a hardware issue with the iPhone.  All hardware issues related to the iPhone are handled by Apple.

Why exactly are you disappointed with AT&T?  What exactly are you expecting from AT&T that they are not providing?  If you are not eligible for an upgrade, you are not eligible.  You can still take advantage of the early upgrade and full price upgrades.

Sorry, but you need to be realistic and address your hardware issues with Apple if you are still under warranty.

At the very least, a visit to a Genius bar would allow you to determine if it is in fact a hardware issue.  If it is and you are no longer under warranty, Apple offers a $199 out of warranty replacement.

My 2-cents: Yesterday, January 10th, at around 3 pm, I noticed a 'no service' indication on my iPhone 4. I called AT&T and was able to get it to function properly after performing a network reset. He recommended changing the SIMM card. An hour later the phone again showed 'no service'.
At 7pm I got in my car and visited the local AT&T store. The lady installed a new SIMM card and the phone worked fine.
At 11pm I noticed another 'no service ' status. I called AT&T tech service, after working for some time we discovered that the same condition, 'no service' existed on my wife's phone. She is also on my AT&T plan.
There was just a little wrinkle with this whole situation: my wife's phone is an older Motorola Razor model. The AT&T Tech said he would escalate the problem to their network specialists.
As I type this, 4am, the still shows 'no service'.

could be an issue with 3G in the area, put your iPhone in 2G mode and see if it works

Both phones are working properly again. The problem was a damaged cell tower in my area.

I have been having the same problem (phone losing service for about 30mins-45mins then regaining service for a limited time and then no service again) since arriving in Newark,New Jersey this afternoon. Does anyone know of any tower problems in this area??

I've been having the same problem with my 3gs for days.  Half the time I have no service/"searching," which is bad enough, but several times in the past few days my phone shows that it has signal, but refuses to send text messages and won't receive calls. Yesterday, my partner called me and my phone not only never rang, but did not show a missed call in the call log.

This is inconvenient, to say the last.

Is this a network issue? Is AT&T aware of/working on this?

Have you called customer service to report the problem?

The only way they would be aware that you are having an issue is if you contact them.

We are all users here like yourself.

The AT&T employees that are here, are posting on their behalf, not as representatives of the company.

Maybe you should contact CS to report your problems and see if issues exist in your area.

Wow, I made a thread just yesterday about this. I'm having the same issues as peterwtie and others. I'm in Riverdale, MD (PG County). Whenever I enter riverdale, my phone becomes dead regarding the network. I leave the city and it works again.

My phone will work in riverdale for maybe 10 minutes then, with full bars showing and 3G, not be able to make calls or use data. Will go from no service to searching to repeat.

I'm 7 miles away from Riverdale right now, surely on another tower, and it's working perfectly now.

Could this be problem?

Its in 4.2.1

Network Controlled Fast Dormancy that helps a smartphone go quiet without going completely idle. The method keeps the iPhone in a limbo state that saves it from having to reconnect to the network, not only eliminating the flood of traffic from a reconnect but improving its battery life by limiting the necessary traffic.

I am having the same issue for past 5 days....If I am near an ATT center I get services..as soon as I drive away I lose it. No Service, severe battery drain, in and out of service. Like many of you been through the multiple trips to ATT and on phone w Customer service.  No one is familiar with this issue.  I've had multiple resets, network resets, SIM card, you name it.  No one knows. ATT says it Apple issue. Apple's website said no service is a provider issue. Who owns the issue? Disappointing. Have been a relatively happy customer until this.  Early network problems and drops seem to go away in recent months now this..

I took the phone apart and attached foil to the antenna. Surprisingly it worked, so if you want, its worth a shot.

I am having the same problem.  I have found that with iPhones in the past I always seem to have issues when a new iphone is due to come out.  Coincidence?!  I have been on and off the phone with AT&T and Apple, paid a visit to the ATT store in my area, I went to the nearest Apple store where a kid helping me actually said these words ver baidem "If I {word filter evasion} your phone up out back, then yes we would replace it, but I won't so you won't get a new phone today".  What is wrong with customer service these days where they can actually say the f word!? That kid said I basically have done everything I could. He deleted the apps that were currently running, thats all he did. Att gave me a new sim, I've restored original settings, etc... I've done it all. If anyone has a solution let me know! I have to deal with this for another month and it's back to Sprint to get the htc!

I also recently had an issue charging!!  Is it ATt's fault?! Ya partially... ATT joined forces with Apple to sell these phones.  Why wouldn't ATT want to keep me as a loyal customer and offer me the iPhone 3gs deal for $49 that they can offer to new customers?!

So fed up!

I have had the same problem with mine.  It started after a big storm here.  ATT jerked me around for so long with the "nothing has changed" and "let us send you new simm cards"  till I had run past the apple warranty.

So i have muddled through with my ATT iphone which works usually in very strong signal areas and have purchased a straittalk.com phone for $30 a month from Walmart for the non-ATT service areas.  Only keeping iphone for calendar, mail, etc.

Today when I upgraded to ios5, i lost ATT service altogether.  Everything works with wireless.... but absolutely no signal from ATT.  Even In places where I normally have service.  My son's phone and my husband's are both getting service from ATT.

Should I restore, or just forget the whole thing?

I have never been able to sustain good coverage with 3g. I have to remain on 2g while my Verizon friends are all on 3g. I have discussed this with ATT . I can have full bars and still drop calls.

Hi,

I have the same problem and after seeing 5 apple geniuses and people at AT&T nobody fixed the issue.

Here is what I did to fix it:
1. Put the phone in airplane mode
2. Turn the phone off.
3. Reboot the phone.
4. After the phone boots quickly go to the settings menu.
5. For a small amount of time a menu called "carriers" shows up.
6. Click on carriers before it disappears! (be quick)
7. In this menu a toggle will say "automatic".
8. Turn this toggle off.
9. The AT&T logo should appear along with bars.

This also corrected the problem I had when I had bars but no service and no AT&T text in the upper left corner.

I'm running os 5.0.1 on an iPhone 4. Non jail broken.

Also I have no data plan with AT&T. Just phone calls and texting.
