Just got my S3. Phone and wifi works fine.
I am not getting any network connection. Should this be automatic, or do I need to set something in "settings".
Yes the Data Enable setting is off by default. That is in Settings> Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks>, Data Enabled will need a check mark.
Call customer service. Your account may not be provisioned properly for data, or the APN on the phone may be incorrect or missing.
