Motorola Backflip™ with MOTOBLUR™ Update Information Available Here
Edited by DevicePipe on Jun 24, 2010 at 6:38:06 AM

Great news for our Backflip Community!

You've been patiently waiting for news on our previous Exclusive Early Software release. We've been improving the experience and would like to form two test groups.

  • If you joined us for the first software preview we had on May 13th and have updated your phone to System version* 13.35, then you'll hop over to the Motorola Backflip™ with MOTOBLUR Community .

  • If, however, you have System version* 12.1199 and you want to participate and upgrade from 12.1199 to 13.37 please following instructions below.  *System version can be seen at  Menu > Settings > About Phone > System version

Our goal is to have 1,000 customers test System version update 12.1199 to 13.37 and 1,000 customers test System version update 13.35 to 13.37. Both groups will then provide feedback on the software before it is officially released to all customers!

The preview software is now available via an over-the-air update until we reach 1,000 users in each group.

All we ask is that…

- If you are participating in the update and are starting on System version 13.35 - please provide your software preview feedback over on the Motorola Forums.

 - If you are participating in the update and are starting on System version 12.1199 - please provide your software preview feedback on this thread. Please use this thread to post your feedback and questions instead of calling AT&T or Motorola Customer Care. We'll be monitoring the thread for any issues.

Note: This is not the Android 2.1 upgrade.

INSTRUCTIONS

Preparing for the update from System version 12.1199 to 13.37

1. Charge your phone prior to or have it connected to a wall charger at the time the update becomes available.

2. Be in a 3G coverage area or on a WiFi network.

Note: AT&T recommends that you download over WiFi if you have data limitations. To get more information on activating WiFi, go here

3. Go to Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Updates

4. The phone will present the following screen.

5. Choose View release notes to see what the update offers. Please Note: To get back to download the update after viewing the release notes: Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Updates.

6. Choose to Download. Downloading will start and the Downloading Icon will appear in the status bar. Downloading on Edge will be significantly longer and is not recommended. Note: Choosing Later will defer the download to a later date. Please be aware that if you defer and the update period closes you will not be able to perform the update.

7. After downloading the software the phone will prompt you to Install or Install Later. The install can be deferred as well but we recommend you do it as soon as you can.

Note: Your phone will switch screens to install the software. This is completely normal. After the update is complete your phone will have a slow first boot. Please do not power the phone off or take the battery out. The installation will complete and put you back at a lock screen or your homescreen once it is completed.

8. You should then automatically receive the notification for the second step of the update.

9. Choose to View Release Notes. Pressing the back button will return you to the screen above.

10. Choose to Download. While you can download later, we recommend you download the software immediately.

11. Once the download is complete you should automatically get the prompt to Install.

12. Choose to Install. While you can install later, we recommend you install the software immediately.

13. The phone will again switch to an Install Screen and then a Blue screen with Motorola Logo. Both are completely normal. Once the install has completed the phone will then complete a slow boot. Do not power the phone off during the software install or the slow boot. Once the update is complete the phone will return to the lock screen or your homescreen.

Thanks for updating your phone to system version 13.37. Please provide all comments regarding your experience during the update process and the days that follow in this thread.

Thanks!

Currently running 12.1199 and no update available yet - is there anything that I need to do here or on the phone for this to be available?

I'd give you Kudos but I'm apparently not high enough in the ranks yet.

The camera takes the best pictures in natural light and doesn't do a great job with artificial light. I have some pictures of things taken around my house that look IMPRESSIVE for a 5 MP phone camera.

@jaredcormier: Hey neighbor!

Okay, to add something useful! The first download finished, now the phone is rebooting for the 3rd time from installing the update.  It did not appear to wipe the phone, as all my apps are still there.  My System version is now 12.1214.  On hitting system update again, it immediately had part 2 pop up and is downloading now.  Mine is going through wifi and it seems to be a large file

Hello folks!

The update has been re-enabled. Looks like some of you have already begun to download it.

Just a friendly reminder to read the original post. We'd like users who got the first software preview(system version 13.35) to comment on their experience during the update and after the update in Motorola's Backflip Community. If you had System version 12.1199,  leave your feedback here.

If you don't know what version you started on:

12.1199 to 13.37 was a two-step download

13.35 to 13.37 was a one-step download

If you want to know what has changed. Read the Official Release Notes.

Excellent!  Glad you noticed our recommendation to download via WiFi to avoid data charges with the new data plans.

Just a note for people updating, on the second go-round, it takes quite a long time to pass the AT&T loading screen

Upgrade 2 is now installing... nice pretty blue moto screen, I like that better than the black and white one!  Now back to the white regular boot up screen, which actually has turned out to be the data wipe, and one more reboot later and I seem to be taking a while for the phone to come up.  Hey lookit that, my background is still there, as are my apps.  But it says I am now up to 0.13.37 system version.

Confirming the 3 home buttons below the screen turn off when in dimmed clock mode, and google sky is working correctly now. These were fixes that had been included in the original 13.35 release, but good to see they're still there!

I just did the two part upgrade in a few minutes.  Seemed fast to me. I have wifi N and a Microcell (i.e. my very own personal 3G cell tower.) That could make a difference. Get a lawn chair and sit under a cell tower when you upgrade.

13.37 update (double update from 12.1199) went flawlessly for me. I've already noticed the screen brightness gig is so much more intelligent. THANKS. And that menus/swipes are snappier by a considerable margin. This snappy difference is a huge usability change for the phone. Fantastic feedback from me so far folks!!

i was able to get the first update after running the system update twice. i had to check for a system update twice, again, to receive the second part of the system update. the installation went very smoothly and took a minimal amount of time. the phone overall seems to be more responsive and snappy. the voice dialer does seem to work better. the camera seems to be a little less sluggish, but there is still a slight amount of lag; unless you are very analytical about it, i don't think it's too noticeable.

it is unfortunate that there was no option to change search providers from yahoo! though or addition of the speech recognition software from google, both of which are my only complaints about this phone. i have installed the speech on my own and i have an alternative to the yahoo! (opensearch or hold the search button down to have google speech recognition do the google search), but to have an alternative out of the box would be greatly appreciated.

I had swype installed using ADB and it seems that it no longer functions properly. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall to see if that works.

Upgraded a few days ago from 1199.  Like others, seeing that AT&T logo on boot was very disconcerting, I actually had the battery cover open for the very first time and was close to doing a hard-boot when I saw the screen dim (showing that it was actually working).  I have no clue how close I got to bricking my phone then...

Umm, observations as per moto forums and release notes...

Battery usage - much improved.  I went to bed last night at 74% which is higher than I've ever gone to bed (usually it's below 60%, sometimes below 40%)

GPS - I turned it on, got a quick lock, nothing that I know of to report really

Bluetooth - I actually started experimenting with BT this week.  Before the update I did notice a much higher level of frustration, it seems to be working much faster to turn on and sync than it had before (I'm trying to get BTCall working)

Overall it looks like a much-needed incremental upgrade and I'm fairly happy to have it.
