Just curious: Is 4G/3G just software/firmware issue that can be upgraded, or is it hardware?

I just saw some ad that implied 3G phones could be upgraded to 4G via software or something...

Is this technologically possible?... or do ppl who have 1st Gen. Captivate have to wait for the next 4G phone?

There are two types of 4G currently:

1. Fake 4G, or 3.5G. It is HSPA+ which AT&T is deploying right now. It is a temporay measure because it doesn't require new hardware at the tower. A simple software upgrade on the 3G tower will magically enable HSPA+

2. True 4G. It is LTE. AT&T is starting to test deloy later this year. It requires all new hardware on the backend and towers.

Phones need to have radio chip that supports HSPA+ to take advange of HSPA+ offered by AT&T. Captivate does not have such radio chip. The upcoming Infuse, Atrix and a few other 4G phones will have HSPA+ radio.

LTE requires all new radio chip as well. When LTE finally gets deployed, none of these '4G' phones will be compatible with it. You will need the new LTE 4G phone.
