You can expect somewhere between 80-140 Kb/s on the EDGE network.

The book answer for this is 400-700 kb/s but when I had my 8525 I consistently got in the 800's.  It's a noticeable difference but the battery drain is also very noticeable.

Because the radio in the 8310 doesn't support 3G. None of the BBs do yet.

Actualy 400-700 is with HSDPA. With 3G you will get 180-320.

3g is both UMTS and HSDPA with most of the newer phones (PDA's) being HSDPA.

The main reason why the 8310 is on the EDGE network is to conserve battery life.  3g phones are known for having poor battery life.

That's really more incidental than intentional.  Basically, RIM hasn't released any 3G devices except for the EVDO models.
