Help to Australia

Hey Guys,

Ok so im traveling to the USA end of the month from Australia. I have just purchased a brand new AT+T sim from ebay and have put it in my UNLOCKED Iphone 3g.

Of course it has come up with No Service as it is not activated. This is meant to happen right?

I have looked through the plans and was thinking of the unlimited 2$ a day plan, now my question is.

Should I activated it while I'm in Australia? Will this work or will i start getting charged? Once I activate is it then that I'm given the mobile number? Is there any other things I should be takign in consideration when activated on the Iphone?

Thank from Sydney Australia guys!

G' Day,

So, unlike Vodafone and Telstra in Oz , AT&T does not offer prepay service for the iPhone in the USA.

You can get a month to month (no contract) iPhone service, however, you will be required to place a large deposit in advance, usually around $500.  You need to get  voice and  data plans, Text plan would be optional at an additional fee.

You're $2.00 sim is not going to do much for you.

When you get here take the phone to any AT&T (preferably corporate store) and they'll set you up.

Remember, month to month,  NOT a 2 year contract.

Cheers mate,

Ohh thats no good. So the prepaid Pay As You Go cell service wont work for me? If i found another phone that is unlocked (not an iphone) would that be able to register the service?

Re: Help to Australia

The voice service should work, but that data service won't. Officially, AT&T doesn't support iPhones on prepaid, although people have gotten it working (but we aren't permitted to discuss that here).

Yes,  another unlocked GSM handset will work with the pre-pay. I set one up for a group Kiwi visitors, and do so again when they return to the USA in June,  worked fine for them last trip. I believe the issue is AT&T does not support smartphones on the prepay.

I used an old AT&T unlocked Nokia handset.  As I understand it, once activated the sim will be locked to the handset in which it is activated. That's not really a big deal. I didn't try switiching the sim to another handset, so don't know for sure.

The other gent is correct,  some people have reported using an iPhone on a prepay plan,. Google AT&T Go Phone using iPhone and you'll see varying answers.

Cheers,
