Help! Previously functioning data feature w/ Iphone-GoPhone stopped working! Now only calls and txt!
Edited by adam81980 on Apr 4, 2012 at 4:12:27 PM

  I need help!

A few months ago I purchased an unlocked IPhone 3GS on E-bay to use on a pre-paid plan.  After doing some research, I choose AT&T's GoPhone plan for $25 per month, with the added $15 data package.  When I got the phone,  it still had IOS 3.1 on it.   I quickly found there were few up to date Apps I could download and use with 3.1! I  decided to upgrade to IOS 5 knowing it would be relocked to AT&T.  No big deal since I was using AT&T, anyway.

When I first received the 3GS,  I went to unlockit.co.nz and changed the APN setting to work with GoPhone.  I then went to the AT&T store to register a GoPhone account.  I did not tell them I was using an unlocked Iphone. I brough my four year old phone that I use to use on an AT&T monthly contract I had for eleven years.

For the first  couple weeks all functions of the 3GS on the GoPhone plan worked!  It was  letting me use apps and internet/data features on the GoPhone network.  Then suddenly, one day (when it was still using IOS 3.1) the data feature stopped working!  I could suddenly only send txts or make calls.  When I tried to use apps/internet, I got the message ""You are not subscrbed to a cellular data service" Even though I'd been paying extra for it.

Since I don't use my smartphone very excessively (Maybe just a dozen times per month, and, the reason I don't want a $50 contact plan for such minimal use) at first this was just a minor inconvenience, as I could usually find a wireless network if I wanted to use internet/apps?  That's what I've been doing up until now.  However, now, a few months later I've just gotten around to trying to get the data function to work that I've been paying an extra $15 per month to use, but haven't been able to access.

This evening I was browsing the forums here when I found the thread,

'Data plan for Gophone (original iphone)

So, what do I do?  Obviously, resetting the APN settings again did something, but didn't work completely.  Before somebody says I can't use Iphone 3GS with GoPhone and Data, I know this isn't true because I was indeed successfully using it when I first got the 3GS.

Thanks,

Adam

Well, it's possible that AT&T caught up with you and disabled the service, which they have been known to do.

ATT clearly states that they do not support the iPhones as a Go-Phone therefore if it works for some period of time, great!  They could have shut just you down or all go-phone's lines that have iPHones.  If you call ATT, they are probably not going to help.

Since you have your own hardware, you can sign up for a standard plan without a contract.

Where do they clearly state this?  I went looking in the prepay TOS and couldn't find the restriction.

They use the term "smartphones"   as in smartphones must have a data plan,  but I don't see anything about iphones..

Thanks,

I don't need a standard plan for $50 per month, when I often use less than a half hour of talk time per month and maybe use data features a half dozen times per month for a minute or less each time.  If you divided the talk/data time I actually use  each month by the number of times I use the service, I think the price per call/data would exceed what people paid to use their "car phones" when they came out 25+ years ago.

Why doesn't AT&T provide a monthly contract for people you might only use their serivce for less than 45 minutes per month? $50 for a couple calls and a half dozen quick log ins to the internet? That's absurd!

I had a monthly contract with AT&T for eleven years before I moved overseas where you're free to use any phone on any network.  In hindsight it was stupid to pay that much for eleven years for something I barley used.

And you're right. AT&T wouldn't help when I called them, but I knew that was going to be the case before I picked up the phone!  And yes, they knew I was using an IPhone although I've never told them.   I just wanted to hear them blantantly lie about Iphone not working with GoPhone, even after I pointed out that it was common knowlege Iphone can be used with GoPhone and any quick internet search shows countless successes. Even gave her a link to a video tutorial after she flat out denied it was possible!  She then politely told me I could take my service elsewhere if that's what I chose to do, once I asked her if AT&T would rather loose $40 per month for a subscriber who barley uses the network, in favor of trying to get them to sign a contract.

In the end, I thanked her for her help and told her I understood she was just telling me what she instructed to tell me and reading off scripts.

LOL Obviously it does not work (or the way you think it should) or you wouldn't be posting here.

Makes no sense to call a company's customer service and ask them to help you break the rules they have in place for their service. Calls like this are why other customers have to wait for help with their legitimate problems.

However, I asked about iPhone 3G,    not iPhone 3GS or 4 as their Q&A indicates.

So it seems there's a difference in their TOS.

did you give a link to the tos? just seems like it was a conversation on chat.

Can;t find anything in their Q&A that states ANY iphone is valid for prepaid, and the OP stated 3GS in their original message

No, I signed on to my AT&T Wireless account and sent an e-mail to Support asking if the iPhone 3G is supported on Go Phone prepay accounts.  The answer is consistent with the link you posted which read  prepay does not support iPhone 3GS or 4.  Therefore, by virtue of that response other models must be supported.

What I posted was the exact response, minus any names, mine or the Support Rep.

as you have read on this forum in in hundreds of other locations cstr for carriers leave a lot to be desired, suspect that if it is not in writting on the tos it is a mistake by tier 1 csr's. If you can post where it is officially stated by ATT on their site in the terms, then it is acceptable, a carrier official website post trumps anything a tier 1 csr woud state.  Call back 10 times and you wil get at leave 8 different responses.

Beside a 3G is a moot point, the OP is talking about a 3GS

However, there's another OP on the forum asking about a 3G and Prepay and that's why I sent the query to AT&T.

It's not my problem that AT&T may have the same problem as the IRS in that their CSRs give different answers.

If I were having the issue I might dig deeper to satisfy your insistance on seeing a TOS, but it's not exactly a high enough priority for me to worry about.

So it seems there's a difference in their TOS.

did you give a link to the tos? just seems like it was a conversation on chat.

Can;t find anything in their Q&A that states ANY iphone is valid for prepaid, and the OP stated 3GS in their original message
