My home computer fails to recognize my iPhone.  I am using VISTA on a fast computer.  It will recognize it once in a while after uninstalling and rebooting and re-installing.  What the heck is going on???

Inwould uninstall iTunes then reboot. Download a fresh copy of iTunes from apple and try again. It may be a deeper issue if that does not work. Are you getting any error messages?

Make sure you are using the most current version of iTunes. Mine was outdated when I activated my iPad 2 and I was having a similar problem to yours. After I updated the problem was gone....
