I have an original iPhone. I understand that this model does not support viewing of MMS. When I attempt to do so, I can see the message sitting in my "Inbox" but clicking the "Play Clip" button opens a new page and starts to load, then pops up the error "Download Failed. Safari cannot download this file."
Okay, fine. As per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3880 "MMS is not available on the original iPhone. Original iPhone owners: you can still view MMS messages you receive using the View my message website."
This sends me to http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=53996&
I go there, only to get this: http://www.viewmymessage.com/webgui/common/404.jsp

In order to improve your experience, there are now three ways you can access your messages:
It offers three ways to access my MMS.
1) is defunct due to stated old model.
2) does not work on the phone itself due to the same issue as 1), and does not work when I type in the address character-by-character on my computer's browser - instead it simply tells me the link is invalid and to go back to the original message to try again.
3) cannot happen because when I attempt to forward a text message to my e-mail, it only offers letters and numbers (ie, it wants someone's phone number or the name associated with someone's phone number). I even tried to copy & paste my e-mail address into the field; before attempting to send, it removed the . and @ sign, then of course reported the red exclamation alert a few seconds later to tell me it failed to send. Assuming I could even get this to work, what are the chances I'll get anything other than the same result as in 2)?
Why does AT&T have no option for those in my situation (old phone they still provide paid service for) to view MMS? Why did they remove online access to received MMS outside of doing so on the phone itself? Yes, I did discuss the problem with their online text/chat tech support, and she tried very hard to help me but could not.

They did; that's why I can't access it online in addition to can't access it on my phone.
But they haven't updated their Wireless Support document at http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=53996 stating as such.

Sorry that you're having an issue view MMS messages and thanks for letting us know there is documentation that needs to be updated. I'll make sure the right team gets that feedback.
