Is there any way to just buy a sim card and pay as you go plan? I have a phone. I'd rather not buy a "throwaway" phone. I'm looking to save money and not waste good phones that won't have sim cards.
Note: I do want to do this online, not at some store.
Sure. You can buy a SIM card directly from AT&T for $5.95 (+taxes and s&h) or you can grab them for cheap on eBay. Got one from here:
AT&T 3G SIM

Absolutely. Saving money in this economy is the name of the game, RyaDracosin. And that includes refills and no taxes, "discretionary" levies, and/or hidden fees on cellular services.
I used exactly the same eBayer when I bought my AT&T 3G 64KByte SIM for $2.79 -- 100% reliable.
And to feed the beast, I use http://www.callingmart.com for all my refills where I get up to 3% discount on the nominal value of the refill "card" plus an additional 3% with their web coupon "ca3p-1207". Again no taxes and/or hidden fees The AT&T GoPhone refill card is found at: http://www.callingmart.com/products/wireless/ProductDetail.aspx?ID=12
If you are in the US, using callingmart.com is a no-brainer. But those with international phone numbers (to be contacted if authentication is required on a first purchase, when the system does not "know" you) probably need to look elsewhere.
