Longhorn Network - Just say 'No'

I greatly appreciate the value provided by AT&T in bundling tv/wireless/internet services.  Similarly, the bundling of channels allows customers to access a variety of programming at substantial savings.

However, occasionally, programming comes along that is so expensive and directed at such a narrow, niche market that it deserves to be left off of the programming options or ordered solely as an 'a la carte' option.  If the reports about the price tag  to cable providers  to offer the 'longhorn network' (by ESPN) are accurate, the only way it could be added to current bundled programming packages is at substantial cost to MANY people who have no interest in the programming.

Please AT&T, keep prices low, by either not offering or charging ONLY those who desire this programming option.

Thanks!

Re: Longhorn Network

Here is the press release:

DALLAS – Just in time for Texas football season, ESPN and AT&T U-verse® TV, the fastest growing television provider in the country*, have announced that Longhorn Network will be available to U-verse TV customers in Texas and across the AT&T U-verse footprint. Longhorn Network is the 24/7 channel devoted to University of Texas athletics and academics as well as cultural programming from in and around the greater Austin community.

AT&T U-verse TV customers will have the Longhorn Network in time for kick off against Wyoming on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. central time live from Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium. Longhorn Network will be available for U-verse TV customers in Texas with the U200 package and aboveOutside of Texas, fans subscribing to the U-verse TV U450 package will have access to Longhorn Network’s exclusive programming. Longhorn Network will be available on channel 1609 in HD and channel 609 in SD.

“We know fans are passionate about watching Longhorn football, and we’re thrilled to offer Longhorn Network to U-verse TV customers in Texas and nationwide,” said Jeff Weber, President of Content and Advertising Services, AT&T Home Solutions. “This is another example of how we continue to deliver the content customers want.”

Added David Preschlack, executive vice president, Disney and ESPN Media Networks, “This agreement brings Longhorn Network and its robust lineup of University of Texas programming to more than a million Longhorn fans in Texas and throughout the country.”

Financial terms and other details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Other exclusive Longhorn Network programming includes the New Mexico vs. Texas football game the following Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. as well as original programming like Longhorn Extra, Game Plan with Mack Brown, Texas All-Access, Texas GameDay and Texas GameDay Final.

Well very interesting ATT since smaller cable companies and Verizon Fios can do it. You are a large company and make plenty of money on high rates. JUST MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!

It's all about the Benjamin's.  ESPN is requesting higher per subscriber fees for Texas customers than those customers outside of the state.  Thus, the more customers that a TV provider has in Texas, the higher will be the cost to added the channel.  AT&T has significantly more Texas subscribers than Verizon FIOS or those smaller cable companies who have added the channel.  It will cost providers like AT&T U-verse and Time Warner Cable quite a bit more to add the channel  because of their high number of Texas subscribers.

Longhorn Network - Just say NO!

Why on earth would I want Uverse to charge me money for a crap network I don't want.  I already pay for enough other channels I don't watch.  The LHN is DOA in the current form--nobody wants it except a select group and the network is at risk of many legal hurdles if UT abandons the Big 12.  If AT&T must carry, make it a pay channel like HBO, but better yet, JUST SAY NO!

Re: Longhorn Network - Just say "Yes"

I agree, the big ten network, wgn and numerous cub stations. Give me the Longhorn network. I will surely leave once an alternative offers the network in my area. I wish Verizon came to my part of Dallas., When I called in one rep read a memo saying that verizon had an exclusive, about an hour later Grande was on. I also said I would cancel when an alternative was available and the lady said I can get you to disconnect now.

This may have been discussed already, but what legal ramifications exist if the Big 12 blows up with Texas and others leaving that conference? Are there legal ramifications with ESPN if this happens? Will the Longhorn Network continue or will that be the end of it?

I don't believe there are any legal ramifications.  The only thing the LHN is preventing, is UT going to the PAC-12.  THey will not allow UT to keep their network if they join.  The Pac-12 has their own national network and 2 regional networks that will start airing next year.

As Abraham J. Simpson would agree with me, There are way too Channels devote to College Sports These days. For the less then 10 people who really want to watch this network 24/7 and all those another Upcoming College Sports Networks, they should all launch as Broadband Channel so everyone wants it, can get access to it.

If OU goes to the Pac-12 that will never happen.  As much as I would love to have an all  OU network, the Pac-12 is starting a national and two regional networks of their own and will not let any of their schools have their own network.

Longhorn Network

I want the Longhorn Network. 10's of 1,000's of Texas Fans want The Longhorn Network.

If AT&T would sign on for this channel they would reap major benefits. How many people would change from Time Warner or Direct TV? 1,000's. And you want to argue..40 cents? Charge me $4.00 a so you can make 10X my .40 every month.

How many new Time Warner, Direct TV or Dish customers would it take to make this profitable?

Please get real. The first carrier  in my area that  has the LHN is getting my Business.

AT&T is headquartered in the state of Texas. They should have been the first to sign on.

Re: Longhorn Network

Went through 8 pages of this thread, and decided to just post this, whether it was posted before or not.

When Big Ten was trying to get Comcast to carry it before the first football season they were going to broadcast, BTN (Fox Sports) was trying to paint Comcast as the problem. But when Comcast told of how BTN wanted close to $1.00 per subscriber on their systems within the Big 10 conference area, yet only wanted $0.25 per subscriber elsewhere nationwide, public sentiment turned ugly. Yet Comcast was more than happy to agree to their demands, IF they could put it on the Sports Pack, which of course BTN would not agree to.

I'd imagine ESPN is demanding the same sort of deal. With ESPN's huge fees already, how can they not ask something like $0.10 or $0.15 and package it with their other "digital service" level channels like Classic, News, and U, to at least get it off the ground? They're not going to have tons of programming, just like how BTN was their first seasons, because of other contracts already in place. ESPN is getting too big for their britches.

Re: Longhorn Network - Just say NO!

I'm watching College Gameday on ESPN and a bit earlier they mentioned an upcoming Texas football game that'll be on TLN and on the list of services carrying the channel was AT&T Uverse[take that for what you may].

I THINK IT SAID SOMETHING MORE TO THE EFFECT OF, "IF YOU DONT WANT TO MISS OUT ON THE LONGHORN NETWORK" THEN CALL DISH DIRECT, ATT ETC.

OT: AND IF TEXAS IS THE LONGHORN NETWORK, THEN OU IS THE FCC! THAT WAS GOOD OLD COUNTRY BOY * WOOPIN RITE THERE.

The game is KU vs UT.  The way UT played today I wouldn't put it past KU beating them.  Oklahoma made them look like a high school team today.
