Error Code 771: Bad Weather and Loss of Signal

Weather and Error Code 771 - No Service & No Signal

Did you know that error code 771 means the receiver is not getting a signal? One of the causes can be thunderstorms and severe weather. If weather is the culprit of error code 771, services should return back to normal once the storm/weather clearsAlso, obstacles like tree branches can affect the signal, especially if they are hitting the dish causing pixelated screens and loss of service.

Special NoteClick here to learn what to do if your service is affected by Hurricane Harvey or Irma

If weather is not an issue and you see code 771, below are some items you can do to determine the best course of action:

  1. Check your cable connections between your receiver and the wall outlet, starting with the SAT-IN (SATELLITE IN) connection and make sure they're secure.  If you have any adapters connected to the cable, check them as well.
  2. If you have a SWiM Power Inserter attached to the DIRECTV cable coming from your dish, unplug it from the electrical outlet.  Wait for 15 seconds, then plug it back in.  Don't plug in the SWiM Power Inserter to a power outlet that can be turned off. Then reset your receiver via the red button.
  3. If it is not raining, check to see if there is anything blocking the dish. If you see an obstruction, do not climb on your roof, chat with us to have this addressed.
  4. Error code 771 may populate if your dish is out of alignment. Check out our Is your Dish is Out of Alignment article test your signal.

In the event of a service outage due to bad weather you can watch your favorite movies and shows On Demand on your computer or mobile device with the DIRECTV app. You can also stream your favorite channels from network websites.

771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

I have an SD receiver that for at least the past week has been constantly showing the 771 searching for satellite signal on some channels while others come in perfectly fine.  For example I can watch Bravo but USA is searching for signal.  My local ABC channel is fine but CBS, NBC, and FOX are searching for signal.  My other receivers and dvr are all fine for every channel.  I've tried unplugging the receiver but it didn't change anything.  Any suggestions before calling Directv?  Thanks.

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

What model SD Receiver do you have?

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable).  You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength".  Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples.  A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):

Satellite transponders (32 total at 101º)

[Most of your standard definition channels are beamed from 101ºW]

1-8    x   x   x   x   x   x   x   x

9-16   x   x   x   x   x   x   x   x

17-24  x   x   x   x   x   x   x   x

25-32  x   x   x   x   x   x   x   x

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

I have same problem except its the HD receiver. The techs that come here have less knowledge then me, & I'm not that smart. I also jumped all the hoops  & ropes. Now says no dish found? Please post if you get the answer.

PS: the 2 standards have limited channels.

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

It's a D12-300.

Surprisingly, the channels are fine now.  I did nothing.

Thanks.  If it happens again I'll get the signal readings.

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

Best to start your own new thread .  In that new thread, let us know the model numbers of your DirecTV equipment.  And post the signal readings from all of the satellites, especially 99º(c), 103º(ca) and 103º(cb).

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

A dish that's is out of alignment may have signals that are on the edge.  Sometimes they provide a good picture, sometimes they provide a 771 error.  If I were you, I'd take 5 minutes and look at your signal strengths and post them back.

Thank You for all the help advise.  Problem is $1,000, short to cut trees blocking certain feeds.  When the leaves fall maybe I can fell them myself.

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

For some reason I didn't get notification of this response until today.  If I have time tonight I'll post signal strengths.  I have a dvr and 2 other receivers using the same dish.  None of them have had this issue.  Wouldn't the dish be out of alignment for all receivers?

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

Post those readings.  They might be right "on the edge", so that not all receivers are as affected.  Or you might have an issue that's only affecting this one box.

This is not an HD receiver.  It's a D12-300.

Re: 771 searching for satellite signal, only on some channels

you are missing all of the even transponders.  this is usually a sing of a bad (corroded) connector somewhere in the line feeding this receiver.  check the coax connectors, specially outside on your ground block and or multiswitch

771 Signal Loss on some channels on some TVs but not others

I get the 771 Signal Loss error on some channels on two TVs in the house.  The other TVs in the house receive those channels.

Ran System Diagnostics resulting in Diagnostic Code:  43-243.

Receiver:  H21/100, Software: 0x4736

Re: 771 Signal Loss on some channels on some TVs but not others

Please post your signal readings

You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners. If you have a DVR it's important to check BOTH satellite tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner on the new post you create, using the example below as a guide. (The example below is only an example and not a form that will appear in your post unless you "cut" and "paste" it.) A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):
