You're right, its the little things. You can alway press the INFO button and in the right upper corner you'll see the current time.
Unfortunately the U-Verse boxes have no LCD display that I'm aware of, unless it's behind where the green, red and blue lights are? At any rate, I think more providers are going with smaller boxes that do not have an LCD display. I had a Comcast box with an LCD display that was so obnoxiously huge that it resembled Nixie Tubes (see below). I think that STB manufacturers are looking closer at Energy Star compliance and clocks / displays may be a thing of the past.
