I have been a direcTV customer for many years. I think DirecTV had a great run, but clearly with streaming, I expect the users to switch over to Streaming via the internet in mass.
I saw on your web site that you offer no mechanism for me to convert my account from DirecTV to AT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW. If this is correct, I think DirecTV is losing a big advantage in that you already have millions of users pretty much captive. Why not make it EASY for me to convert from DirecTV to AT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW, instead of making statements like if you close your DirecTV account you may have to pay a penalty?
I'm seriously looking at several streaming competitors right now, and already have signed up for Youtube TV, and am evaluating it now. If you had a way to covert from my Satellite account to streaming, and made it easy, you'd keep a large percentage of your DirecTV customers for now.

The products are not related and have separate billing mechanisms. DTVN is a no-contract pre-paid month-to month service. There is nothing to convert - just sign up, select a package, provide a payment method. Your contract with DTV has nothing to do with DTVN.

Forgiving the early termination penalties and offering DirecTV NOW probably would retain a lot more customers. But AT&T is incapable of thinking more than a few step ahead, and the right hand has no idea what the left hand is doing. If the two services were integrated from the start, we'd already have DVR capability and a huge streaming infrastructure that could have handled the traffic they seem unable to handle now.
But it all comes down to money. It cost DTV a couple hundred bucks to set up a customer with satellite. Takes a few years for them to make that money back, hence the early termination fees. Plus they want to discourage anyone from dropping satellite and switching to cheaper streaming. I think DirecTV NOW exists not to retain customers, rather to pull them away from other streaming services like Sling and as a tool to get their phone customers to bundle phone service and streaming.

As i work for Directv i can safely assure you that there are now options to be able to switch within the AT&T family for your tv services. You can now safely switch between services WITHOUT a cancellation fee. Eg. You have either Directv Sat or AT&T U-verse and switch to Directv Now without cancellation fees, Same if you went from U-verse to Sat and vice verses.
I hope this helps you from here on in.

So you are saying that if you have a contract with DirecTV requiring you to maintain (or at least pay for) service for a specified period of time, that obligation would go away if you just sign up for DTVN?
Letting you off the hook for a $100/month obligation in exchange for a $35/month payment seems unlikely.
I would be skeptical about that, and would suggest anyone acting on that information get it in writing that their obligation to DTV has been fulfilled.

I understand that Directv satellite is getting ready to start moving some customers to streaming. Is that stream going to be Directv Now?

I've talked to them twice and they wouldn't let me switch without the cancellation fee. How do you do it?

unless its in writing its not valid ever.regardless of what you are told or promised its not valid ever unless in writing. Did i mention it has to be in writing to be valid?

I just spoke with AT&T and the rep said the terms of the original contract are 24 months. Switching from Direct to Now constitutes a termination, therefore termination fees apply. A complete shame as my contract expires in 2 months, so I will just go with an HD antenna, hulu, and netflix...lol

Understand, however with conflicting information, needed to verify. Trust no one on the internet, you keep your sanity longer.

Thanks, @bcbsncjlj for help on this one:
The products are not related and have separate billing mechanisms. AT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW is a no-contract pre-paid month-to month service. There is nothing to convert - just sign up, select a package, provide a payment method. Your contract with DTV has nothing to do withAT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW.
To add on, if you have a contract with DIRECTV (satellite) and want to move to AT&T TV or AT&T TV NOW, the cancellation fee applies.
If you have a contract with U-verse and want to go to DIRECTV (satellite), the cancellation fee is waived.
