How It's Made reruns marked as new!

This has happened twice in the last couple of weeks. We have How It's Made set to record new episodes, and there have been a couple of marathons in the last 2 weeks where all episodes are marked as new, and I end up with 10-12 episodes or more before I notice and start deleting them. This time I actually saw them before they recorded and filled up my DVR. Is anyone else seeing this, and is this an AT&T issue, or is their guide data vendor screwing up?

Bump. So no one is having this problem? I decided to remove and re-add the series recording for How It's Made, First Run only, on Sci HD only, and I currently have 226 episodes set to record over the next 2 weeks.

Good luck Smiley Wink

Edit:  Searched 'How I' 682 came up and sampling them, are all OLD OAD dates here in metro Detroit.

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

I was on the fence about starting a new thread related to the problem in this thread but it would be in the form of a "rant/venting" because I assume nothing could be done so I didn't post it. Then I see this thread which is basically the subject on what I was going to rant about. So this seems an appropriate place to "rant" or vent my frustration here.

Whenever I set up a series record I use the settings "Any day, anytime", "First run only". This works reliably on all channels except for the Science channel. I assume that because the Science channel doesn't have enough new programming to fill all their time they show "marathons" of old series they have plenty episodes of like "How do they do it?", "How it's made", "Outrageous Acts of Psych", and so on. I watch new episodes of these series so I have them programmed in my DVR with, as I said before, "Any day, anytime", "First run only".

These episodes were previously shown through the years and therefore not classed as "new" but for some reason appear in the grid with no original air date. If there is no original air date listed, then the DVR will schedule them to be recorded when programmed with "Any day, anytime", "First run only". Result is the DVR is flooded with scheduled recordings of all these old shows. The I have to go through the scheduled list each week to make sure these old shows are not recorded. It's easy enough to do. Just select each scheduled program and see if their is an original air date (and possibly a title) and delete if not there.

But why only the Science channel? Is it the Science channel that is supplying incomplete info to the grid provider? If not the Science channel is it the grid provider leaving the info out? If not either of these two is it Uverse screwing it up in some way leaving it out of the grid?

My opinion is the problem lies with the Science channel or grid provider. Which is why this is a "rant" since I assume nothing can be done to get either of these corrected.

Well now that I finished venting and ranting I feel much better! Man Happy

@mibrnsurg: Thanks, I shot him a PM. We'll see if there's anything AT&T can do, or if it's an upstream data issue.

I checked another guide data provider. They showed those time slots as TBA. So is it a bad data provider or AT&T? I've had this problem before, but it was usually only a few episodes and not a big deal so I let it slide. But this particular one is pretty extreme.

Based on looking at various other grids (TitanTV, zap2it) I now suspect it is the Sci channel itself that is not providing the info.  So I went to the Sci channel web site (Discovery Viewer Relations - hope that's the right place) and sent them a message explaining the problem.  We'll see if they respond.

@Me   If there is no OAD, the DVR programming thinks it is new because 6-7 years ago, the OADs disappeared.  So, it was set-up to tag anything w/o an OAD as new.

That same programming is still in the DVRs and I see that happen and check one if it comes up at an odd time.  If no OAD I delete it from Scheduled Recordings. Smiley Surprised

I am not sure what you are saying or are you just confirming.  I already said that because there is no OAD shown the DVR thinks it is "new" and schedules it.  Currently OADs do show on other rerun programs on other channels.  Or is it, thinking out loud, the OADs were dropped back then for some reason and then came back on later shows but the troublesome reruns in that "hole" back then are the ones Sci channel just happens to be showing?

> That same programming is still in the DVRs and I see that happen and check one if it comes up at an odd time.  If no OAD I delete it from Scheduled Recordings.

Which is exactly what I do but maybe didn't describe it clear enough earlier.  It just gets tiresome after a while.  For example, look at the Sci channel (1258) for Friday 10/9 "How It's Made" at 4PM, 5:30PM, 5PM, 5:30PM, 8PM.  And Saturday 10/10, "Outragous Acts of Psych" at 5PM, 5:30PM, 6PM, 6:30PM, 7PM, 8PM, 8:30PM, 9PM, 9:30PM, 10PM.  I agree it's quick and easy enough to delete them, but I need to do it every week when I review my record schedule.  We shoudn't be required to jump through this hoop.  Or alternatively have to go back and delete the recordings like the OP said because they don't review the schedule ahead of time.

One other thing I forgot to mention about this which is problematic is that if you record enough stuff on other channels and not review you run the risk of not recoding something you wanted that is new due to the stream limitations on how many programs you can record at once. Some of these reruns could just happen to be shown at the same time (assuming you don't set priorities) with some program you actually wanted.

At any rate, all this is why I said my post was in the form of a rant and was just venting publically.  I've learned to live with it by now. I really don't expect anything to change on the Sci channel.

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

Just as an aside, the Series Recordings are not designed for marathons or batches of shows.  It will not properly pick up all the programs under any setting.

It is much easier to just Browse thru the channel and press the Record button when you want to choose a program to record. Smiley Wink

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

Having to individually schedule every program is inconvenient.  What's the point of having series record if you shouldn't use it?

As for OAD, just as a reminder sites like TitanTV and zap2it also have problems with those Sci channel "marathons".  TitanTV doesn't show original air date for those either and zap2it doesn't even list the shows but instead usea a placeholder marked "To Be Announced".  These are why I was suspecting the Sci channel as being at fault.

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

I got a reply from the Science channel:

Dear Viewer,

Thank you for contacting Science Channel.

We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to write us and for bringing
this matter to our attention. Please know that we will take your
comments under advisement. Thank you for expressing your interest in our programming. Sincerely, Viewer Relations Science Channel

Looks like a generic response to me.  Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Inconvenient?  That way you'll get the ones you want, not 100s of them using Series Recording and have to wade thru them.

The ones that have no OAD also have a generic description, does not list the items involved like those w/an OAD.  New How It's Made are Thu 9pm EDT 1258. Smiley Surprised

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

That's not a solution, that's a workaround for a flaw. And it is inconvenient. If guide data was correct in the first place, the series record feature would work as intended. Individually marking episodes to record completely defeats the point of having a DVR. And, since the guide only goes out 2 weeks, you have to remember to set new episodes to record every week or two. I pay AT&T $200+ every month exactly for these kinds of conveniences. If the "solution" is to put up with flaws and just deal, I have no incentive to pay a premium price to AT&T, and every incentive to go with another provider or roll my own OTA + Netflix like so many others.

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

The guide data is provided by the program provider to a guide data provider that AT&T (and others) use.  If you want that program provider to provide accurate information, telling other AT&T users about your displeasure hardly seems likely to make that happen.

Re: How It's Made reruns marked as new!

I'm confused as to your point. This is a forum run by AT&T for U-verse issues, is watched by AT&T employees and customers, yet you're suggesting it's not appropriate to complain here about issues with the service we're paying for? Since the guide data is provided by a third party (that AT&T pays for), that I should just what...drop it? I have no way to contact the guide data provider and ask them to fix it. Only AT&T can do that. I don't understand is why this forum seemingly populated with "experts" whose solutions are to put up with problems.

I have messaged AT&T employee @Fox Mulder, but haven't heard back yet. I'm sure he's busy but hopefully he can provide some insight into why this keeps happening.
